1973 Princess Margaret opened ward 42. With its new curtains & flowers 42 was a step up from 51/52, located in the car park! They received no Royal Visit!

1993 Princess Anne opened The Scottish Renal & @erakidney Association meetings.

He was describing 'the method of separation by diffusion through a septum of gelatinous matter' In 1861 he described the effects of dialysing urine - electrolytes went into the external water and a white mass was left - 'pure urea'.

Dr Kolff (1911-2009)who invented the 1st dialyser came to Glasgow in 1979 & is pictured here alongside the statue of Thomas Graham in George Square. Graham was a Professor Chemistry, born in Glasgow in 1805. Graham coined the term dialysis from the Greek dia - through and luein - to loosen.

The Kidney Unit at GRI dialysed its first patient in 1959. Arthur Kennedy was in charge - pictured with a biochemist & the dialysis machine (pic 1/2). It was called a Kolff Kidney after it's inventor, Dr W.J. Kolff. The Kolff kidney was last used in Glasgow in 1974 (pic3/4).

@friendsofgri.bsky.social set-up specialist burns treatment in 1833. It had a vital role in treatment of burn injuries sustained in Glasgow's industrial revolution. One treatment was Carron oil (lime water/linseed oil mix) developed at the Iron Works. Now used as a supplement for horses!

The magic of Toasted Ryvita. Who knew?

A testimonial published as a letter in 1930 in The Glasgow Medical Journal
The writer had been given some free samples for their patients. Perhaps there was some bias, perhaps not?
