Four of my all-time favorites are up for #5DebutAlbums1014 - The Joy Formidable ‘The Big Roar’, Steve Mason ‘Boys Outside’, Mirrors ‘Lights and Offerings’, and The Sound of Arrows ‘Voyage’ - so it’s gonna be a twenty-plus-way race for fifth.
#ArtistFaveLP Prince - Dirty Mind

3: Dirty Mind

The title track and mission statement for this masterpiece; over a bubbly synth bop, Prince spins a lurid tale of unrequited lust…but not for lack of trying.

4: Uptown

Tuuune. (Try taking the MTA and not getting this stuck in your head, you can’t.)

Not buying an original LP copy back in the day is one of my huge music regrets; I used to see them all the time and think: “$60? Outrageous!”. lol, if only I’d known…
Unrelated to the live conversation, your selection of the album for this challenge has me listening to it for the first time in I have no idea how long, so thank you for that.
Evening sir, here are my choices for #5DebutAlbums8084

Sonic Youth - Confusion is Sex (5pts)
“Weird Al” Yankovic - s/t
GoGo’s - Beauty and the Beat
Oingo Boingo - Only A Lad
Waitresses - Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful?

HM: This Mortal Coil, Vanity 6, Art of Noise, Duran Duran, REM, etc.

5: Sister

A masterclass in song economy, he crams more shock/awe/brilliance into 92 seconds than some manage in a career; the gleeful exclamation “incest is everything it’s said to be!” is as headturning today as on first listen.

By the time I saw them Jimmy was gone so I’ve never seen all original 4 together; Matt Cameron was a good stand in but when I saw them later on one of the anniversary tours with Jimmy it was a completely different experience.
They did this when I saw them on this tour and it was spectacular, one of my favs from the album. 🖤

6: Partyup

The thematic outlier on the album, its socially conscious lyrics point the way to ‘Controversy’ while musically the funk ties it to the rest of the LP; we also have it to thank for The Time.

(…and the post has incorrect grammar in it, but I’m gonna keep it.)

7: Gotta Broken Heart Again

I can’t lie, the incorrect grammar of the title had always driven me nuts and perhaps led to the placement; a straightforward piano driven blues number that points to “How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore?”.

I didn’t love ‘Until Excess’ when it came out but I quite enjoy the others; I also haven’t revisited that one (or the band as a whole, really) in a while so perhaps it’s time for a deep dive back in.

(And, of course, it’s ‘Roaring Night’ not ‘Roaring Moon’, whoops.)
Ooh I love those Besnard Lakes albums, especially ‘Roaring Moon’. This reminds me, I need to check out the new one.
This is fantastic stuff, thank you for sharing it.

The Waitresses - Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful?

There’s so much more to this one than “I Know What Boys Like”; wildly underrated and an outside shot at my top 5.

8: Do It All Night

A perfectly serviceable genre exercise with a slightly naughty lyric, it’s more that most of the rest of the album is incredible whereas this one is just great fun.

Certainly one of the finest live acts going, I never miss a chance to see them.

HM: Gotta Stop (Messin’ About)

Non-album single/b-side (depending on the country) mines a similar jerky New Wave vibe to “When You Were Mine”; a mini-masterpiece.

“What goes on inside your head that makes you want to take them all to bed?”

My favorite Pulp LP by far, excited to see your ranking.
I’m all in for this one, fantastic choice.
For this month’s #ArtistFaveLP , I’m choosing my favorite Prince album to celebrate its 45th birthday earlier in the month. Since there’s only 8 tracks and 1 non-album single to go through, the countdown starts tomorrow.
Looooved ‘Weapons’, enjoy! 🧡
