Communities are powering forward on retrofitting buildings 🏗️

But many are held back.

Can supporting them be a win-win for investors & built environment professionals too?

Read the new piece by Ellie Davies (Footwork), Sara Edmonds (National Retrofit Hub) & Alasdair Ben Dixon (Collective Works).
What’s stopping community retrofit?  - Collective Works

During #PeopleAndPlace2025, Pippa is collaborating with mentor Riannan Martinson (@wecanmake.bsky.social) to demystify the process of becoming a Registered Provider — with the ambition of unlocking funding access. Riannan has worked in Bristol’s community-led housing sector since 2017.

At Whitleigh Community Trust, Pippa St John Cooper is working on an ambitious vision for community-led housing – striving to deliver multiple homes for social rent, with a community garden and growing spaces 🏡

Community asset development is locally-rooted and each place's needs and spaces are unique. Yet, we can learn so much from those who have been through similar journeys 🗺️

How do you lead a retrofit project confidently — asking the right questions & building strong technical partnerships along the way? 🧱 🤝

Alex Towler (Transition by Design) is mentoring People & Place innovator Alex Lui to transform a Bicester heritage asset into a community space for social impact.
We left with inspiration about how community hubs & workspaces can thrive, when locally-rooted & shaped for social & environmental justice.

Plus practical insights for partnering with asset owners (e.g. profit shares) & being values-led in how you operate (e.g. monthly forums & subcommittees).
