Watched the first episode of "The Chair Company" and I feel like Tim Robinson doesn't work in long-form stories because I can't understand how he got through the part of life before we met him to wind up with a wife, children, and a high-paying job.

I don't think there's right or wrong when it comes to horror and comedy especially. I didn't realize it had a 'gets on lists' kind of reputation now. When it came out it did well enough and got decent reviews but then evaporated from the public consciousness.
