To understand that violence exists in many forms, including (but not limited to) symbolic, normalised, and structural — and that these forms all feed into one another. It’s an uncomfortable topic for many. I understand that. But it opened my eyes to a lot of things I was previously oblivious to.

One of the worst evenings I have ever experienced.

Unpublished for nearly forty years, photographs by Francesca Woodman taken by George Lange were first exhibited at the Denver Art Museum in 2018, in an exhibition entitled "Portrait of a Reputation". But that's not all: photographs are the portrait of a friendship.

“The rush and pressure of modern life are a form, perhaps the most common form, of contemporary violence. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to too many demands, to commit oneself to too many projects … is to succumb to violence.” ~ Thomas Merton

This is what a lot of people say. The problem is that normalised violence desensitises us to the point where we don’t realise it’s even happening. We’re nowhere near as sensitive to it as we think we are.

If I could choose one unit of study to be compulsory for everyone, it would be the anthropology of violence. It’s not even a close call.

Meanwhile, a friend has been begging her employer to send her more work because she’s bored. They tell her to not worry about it because they’re not worried about it. So she reads, watches films, paints, and has her neighbour over for coffee. She also gets glowing performance reviews.

Calm, calm, easygoing, calm, easygoing, serene, completely loses it and walks away. That’s a pattern of behaviour I should probably break.
