I grew up in central NJ and we got the major Jewish holidays off, either specifically or as a "teacher inservice day"

now the state also gives them Eid-al-Fitr off and has "excused absence" rules for Hindu, Sikh, Orthodox, etc holidays where students aren't penalized for skipping school for church

i used to live in the student ghetto with a chef who blew out his knee and got on disability and foodstamps while waiting for surgery

i had to get the catalytic converter replaced on my 2011 subaru a few months ago and there was a 6 week gap between it breaking and finally getting fixed because every subaru supplier in the country was out of that part

here's a curry recipe published in an english cookbook in 1747

TAKE two Fowls or Rabbits, cut them into small Pieces, and three or four small Onions, peeled and cut very small, thirty Pepper Corns, and a large Spoonful of Rice, brown some Coriander Seeds over the Fire in a clean Shovel, and beat them to Powder, take a Tea Spoonful of Salt, and mix all well together with the Meat, put all together into a Sauce-pan or Stew-pan, with a Pint of Water, let it stew softly till the Meat is enough, and then put in a Piece of Fresh Butter, about has big as a large Walnut, shake it well together, and when it is smooth and of fine Thickness dish it up, and send it to Table. If the Sauce be too thick, add a little more Water before it is done, and more Salt if it wants it. You are to observe the Sauce must be pretty thick.

my town (pop 1900) has 2 traffic lights and one of them is extremely needed so people can actually turn left, but one side of it constantly backs up bc so many people won't turn right on red despite no sign, good visibility, and minimal cross-traffic
