The Twat in the Flat Cap is a nice little feature and let's face it, is still valid today.

Nice little fanzine, well worth 50p

There were some high spots in a long relegation struggle, probably the best (in living memory) was beating Man City 1-0 at Maine Road. The great spot the ball competition commemorates that & Bury fans STILL have bragging rights over families and oil rich neighbours to this day!

There are cartoons a plenty, some breaking copyright, others overly large to fill a page but overall pretty good, I do like Goal Aid and the Man city sponsors logo.

The editorial poses the question "Staying up?" They didn't but the season wasn't without it's highlights for Bury fans as we'll discover. In any case a nice insight into what drove fans to self publish.

Today's #fanzineoftheday is from 1998, Bury's Dead and Bury(ed). Fantastic cover and name. The 97-98 season saw the Shakers in the heady heights of the first division, now of course the championship.

Thanks for this, that article appearing in all the great humour is a stark reminder that the 80s and 90s weren’t always the universally great times that people would have you believe.

I feel very privileged to have had 6 early issues of this brilliant fanzine sent to me with a suitable donation to charity made in return. Any and all other donations greatly received and made.

The adverts alone are worth it. The sadly departed Murdoch soups and pies were legendary at Aggborough and obviously gave the fanzine its name. AND I managed to find a picture of the Fair (Stourport) shopfront...as appealing as the ad'

Nothing is normal or remotely dull about this fanzine, even the match reports are great, chants, promises of an unpredictable bladder investigation and pub guides. There is confirmation if you needed it that even 35 years ago having a Tory MP is a complete and utter waste of time

There is a shocking report about crowd violence at Kettering. You really don't expect to see this sort of thing in non league football but the 90s were a different time and thankfully the police aren't quite as incompetent and stupid today, close though it might be sometimes.

There's an amazing skit of Shoot! player profiles. The steak, lager and Dire Straits guide is majestic. Though I've no clue who this player is I think Shoot! missed a trick not including a "Person most like to sleep with" question. Great spreadsheet potential for @theskystrikers.bsky.social

Today's #FanzineoftheDay is issue 3 of Classic The Soup from Kidderminster Harriers in April 1990. Renamed The Satanic Soup for this issue with a very frisky front cover.

If you’re from or lived in Leeds you’ll know this well.

I’m here at Leeds museum giving tours today, fanzines and much much more, (including a Leeds shirt) come on down.

A reminder of the 80s, managers/players going down the leagues for one last payday, fanzines/printed records that we should cherish, local ads, very average print, B&W action photos, 10p programmes, jumpers for goalposts, forgotten clubs, the GMVC and Graham Westley being crap.

Don't recognise many of the names on the team sheet but I'm sure some do... except there is Graham Westley, he of Stevenage and not much else managerial fame.

He clearly didn't have a very high opinion of Tommy Docherty but it's nice to hear Graham Bressington was being given a rest. That's the other thing, Tommy D at Altrincham...again I'd forgotten that this was his last managerial port of call.

Fanzine adjacent? Clearly it wasn't one but the raison d'etre of the league (explained here) allowed the programme editor to be freer than he might have been in an official programme and I'm not sure he would be paid for this work. That league table is very "fanzine" though.

The Capital League I hear you cry? Well I wasn't aware of or had forgotten this & there is very little about it online. (Ran 1984-85 to 2014-15 and that's about it) The early season table with a great logo is here (clubs didn't play the same number of fixtures, it was very casual)

Today we're going to do a special #NotQuiteaFanzineoftheDay.

Quite often when I buy job lots of fanzines little oddities get thrown in that are, well, fanzine adjacent. Take this for example, the 10p programme for a Capital League fixture between Wycombe and Brentford.

Home end was no better for queues by 5 to 3, mainly because everyone had tried to fit a last pint from the social club in before KO

The bit between the floodlights in that photo was the uncovered away end. Many a happy Saturday afternoon was spent laughing, singing and shouting at away fans getting absolutely soaked in the pouring rain as the pitch, for the millionth time, became a mud bath.
