Poet, singer songwriter. Thank you, thank you very much – but I’m not the voice of my generation, just a song and dance man.

Oh sing! Sing of the #idealistic youth who dared to confront and #educate the heavens. His motives were pure, his lighting divine - yet every scene devoured him . . . slowly.

A woman, a beautiful woman, once told me I looked #idealistic when I lit my pipe at sunrise. I think she meant I looked foolish. I’m not that foolish now, maybe.

“Idealistic ain’t blind - it just sees with both eyes closed and the heart wide open.”

I heard that from a waitress who wore rosary beads and roller skates.

I thought I had an #education in human nature - then she walked in and flunked me with a smile.

One of the few advantages of touring was the opportunity for post-concert “education,” #education provided by the many enthusiastic tutors I met along the way. All I can say here is, “thank you, thank you very much!”

he was #Idealistic
he had big dreams

he said, “Life, I am here!”
and Life replied,
happiness tempered by sorrow

Yeah, I use #domestic American cheese when I make my bologna sandwiches. I like it much more than other kinds, like that French American Cheese.

#Domestic is the door that flirts with the wind. It creaks seductively. It opens just enough to be mysterious ;-)

“May the Angel of Wildness disturb the places where your life is #domesticated and safe, take you to territories of true otherness – where all that is awkward in you can fall into rhythm.”

Each of us is haunted by a #creature. It sleeps with us. We can see it in our dreams. It catches our attention when we wake.

Those of us who are sensitive can see the creatures that lurk beside us, and call them by the names – Loneliness, Grief, Worry, and Hopelessness.

What’s yours?

I am fascinated by the daily #domestic rituals performed by Earthlings. My favorite it’s called, “Burning Toast.“

My conjecture is that it is done to summon their ancestors. And it is done with great fervor.

When I first loved, I #groped. And not just in the physical sense, but in every way. I reached out blindly, trying to connect. What did I know? I was a kid. I still don’t really know. Well, at least all that mess inspired my lyrics.

Thank you, thank you very much.

A half human, half dolphin #creature. Marine biologists believe that it might have the ability to communicate. Wow!

Within each of us is a dark, selfish, insatiable #creature. The psychiatrists have names for it. But whatever it’s called, I know it’s there and I let it show itself in my music.

One hot, sleepless, summer night, I met a #creature rising slick from the swamp, fireflies circling his gospel crown. To my guitar chords, he moaned some kind of voodoo melody. Damned but, come morning, I forgot. Now, I can only catch random licks and riffs in my dreams.

The #creature came in winter. It did not knock. It did not speak. It sat beside me and stared at the fire until it died. I asked its name. It spoke MY name. And then, I woke.

Back in college, I would spend weeks on end with beautiful people in the prime of life. So much so that when I ventured into town, a child or an old person would catch my attention, looking like some form of #creature.

Yeah, I hate the music #business, but mama did a kind of business too. She did business with her hands, folding shirts, counting coins, stretching the turnips and beans. It is making a way. It’s survival. It’s grace. It’s the gospel of getting through.
