#OnThisDay in 1610, Galileo Galilei recorded the first mention of Jupiter's moons. At first thinking them to be fixed stars near the gas giant, his later observations revealed them to be orbiting Jupiter. Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto are now known as the Galilean moons.

It took four days from submission to publication, and nearly five years from publication to retraction. After campaigning by many, many scientists, and an investigation by Elsevier, an infamous paper on hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment has been retracted. 🧪

Born #OnThisDay in 1863 was American astronomer Annie Jump Cannon. Cannon, who lost most of her hearing early in her life, was one of the Harvard Computers, and her work was vital to the modern classification of stars. She classified around 350,000 stars during her career. #DisabilityHistoryMonth

The most extreme heatwave (long duration with no relief) I have experienced in my lifetime.
EXTRAORDINARY HEAT IN SOUTHERN AFRICA
MINIMUMS >30C in Botswana, never happened in 140+ years of climatic history
MIN 30.3 Sua Pan
ALL TIME RECORDS
42.2 Lethlakane,41.9 Mahalapye
Up to 45C next weeks in Mozambique and Malawi
It s BY FAR the harshest heat wave in Southern Africa
Congrats again Andreas, a thousand time well deserved! 🎉
