caught up with a PhD friend last night to chat about what we're working on and we talked for two hours. It's so nice to feel like a historian again
what an incredible paper title tho 👀
would love to be a writing buddy but alas I have a 9-5 so will be doing this over the weekend 💀
also haven't been on here in ages but hello!!
as one of the kiwis who left - really badly!
wife asked me "what order are popes normally from" and i was like oho what an excellent breakfast table discussion
when gerry brownlee lost ilam in 2020 I thought that would be the best election moment of my life. thanks to the good voters of Dickson QLD for proving me wrong 🙏
if anyone has some 🔥🔥🔥 memes about thesis writing please drop them here, I'm on a mission to make some honours students chuckle
All my colleagues are in the CPSU, which I probably should have taken as a sign before now
Yeah, it seems to be pretty variable, which is disappointing and a bit dishonest given how they promote themselves as a union for all university staff. I joined because it's the equivalent of the TEU and never even considered the possibility that there would be different unions within the sector
Given the NTEU's advocacy at the national level for "third space" positions that sit across the academic/professional divide (positions which are hugely affected in this restructure) there is a clear ideological inconsistency with what's happening at UOW.
I believe in unions because I believe in standing in solidarity with my colleagues across the sector. It's profoundly disappointing that I can't do that as an NTEU member because they are, for whatever reason, cherry-picking what positions are worth fighting for
Disappointed to have resigned my NTEU membership this morning. I don't know if it's just at UOW or statewide that the NTEU only represents academic staff in practice, but the complete silence and apathy from the union in the face of this devastating professional staff restructure is very telling.
got dressed this morning remembering the forecast was 23 last time I checked. it had gone up to 26
i can imagine the exact kind of lengthy email I would have gotten in return about principles of course design
anyway to any PhD students reading this, save everything teaching-related to your personal storage
filed under a seemingly endless list of "stuff i never saved from UC IT accounts because I figured if I ever needed it again I could email Chris and it would be a good excuse for a yarn": course outlines for every course I tutored on
first discussion post topic for my grad cert is a "memorable learning experience" either positive or negative. fondly remembering the time a classmate told our lecturer very late in the semester that he wasn't leaving the room until he'd given us a question for the final essay
every headline I see about universities blindly adopting AI tech radicalises me more
there's also few lines of work where being good at the job and wanting to continue to improve at that job is rewarded because the only progression is into management and out of the job you're good at
fingers crossed because this place is lawless
this is a rhetorical question because I blocked them
