This is a sound instinct imho. I went down a rabbit hole on this while researching a film project a few years back - recently put it all down across a series of articles on Substack.

No idea, but sinking Farage is a pre-condition for everything else.

What is encouraging, though, is the pre-emptive Reform panic that they will *at last* face some political accountability for Brexit. The shrill defensiveness is a good indicator that being allowed to skate on this question for nearly 10yrs has been an absolute gift to them. Correction long overdue.

This so overdue. Relieved that it’s now featuring more heavily in messaging - has to be pinned mercilessly on Farage.

This snapped me into an upright position as well - “best researchers”. FFS, there are clueless morons in charge.

This is very good - I encountered some of these Tories when canvassing in May: young-ish, affluent, Starmer Labour-curious but reflexively resistant. More than anything they just seemed bewildered, with nowhere to go politically & really wanting Labour to do a Blair-style sell, yet doubtful.
elioespana.bsky.social
This continues to advance the argument for some form of PR. Despite what media Reform-fever would have you believe, there are more people on the left of politics than the right, and a coalition on the left may produce better outcomes than a Labour Party which feels it can’t simply ignore the right.

Fascinating summary of the drivers behind UK house price madness, together with suggested remedies which do seem achievable. But it’s another illustration of why things will remain stuck until there’s a radical change to the financial system.

There was a dry run of this during the pandemic - I moved at that time. The reduction in stamp duty just transferred, immediately and in full, to the sale price.

Are the “rip-off” degrees those which require thoughtfulness, empathy and imagination, and are therefore utterly unfathomable to people who are in the modern Conservative Party?

The “identity politics” bit seems legit - of which Badenoch, Jenrick et al are the chief exponents.

Hmmm. Within the pantheon of over-regarded directors, where well over “60% of the films stink”, I’d probably place Ridley Scott as the apex example. 3 good films, 3 middling films, all the rest (of the many, many films) are bad.
Bad movies: is Ridley Scott right to say that 60% of films stink?

Excellent primer with @zoejardiniere.bsky.social on the present state of the immigration system & the policy issues involved. Good on the recent history, inc. Dublin regs. Policy thoughts on how the govt might stop fucking this up so repetitively. Recommended as part of your anti-Farage arsenal.

Having canvassed in urban, East Kent in May, my feeling was that the Reform surge driven by the immigration rage-machine & online conspiracism - “the globalists” etc - was so deranged that I think it may have to naturally exhaust itself before many of these voters are able to return to reason.

Really interesting detail on Ukraine’s campaign targeting Russian oil refineries.

I wonder if this type of campaign can be co-ordinated with the sanctions and other activity on the part of the European states, in order to further disrupt global movement of Russian oil & accelerate the pain.

Hi all, just sent out this free post to explain what matters (and what does not) in the Ukrainian campaign against Russian oil refineries. It discusses why the campaign now seems more successful, but also what else needs to happen to have a greater strategic effect. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...
