This would allow the whole ship to maneuver in space. It would use collective and cyclic pitch control like a helicopter. While not specifically an Apollo project, the report included a Command Module for one of the designs.

Apollo Heliogyro: a 1969 proposal by the Astro Research Corporation. The Heliogryo is a unique type of solar sail. The sails are mounted in a pinwheel configuration, and each can be rotated in order to change the angle of the blade with respect to the incoming radiation.
A spaceship with a central hub and a big wheel of golden solar sails.

If you're lucky you'll have shelter ready to jump into, someplace you can believe for a while will be safer."

This line in Shadow Ticket felt like Pynchon talking directly to us:

"Maybe I didn't know what I was talking about. Maybe it's too late. Just mind what you see and hear in the sky. Ain't likely to be wild geese on the wing...

The Virgo over Venus. This is my concept for a crewed Venus exploration vessel in the 2100s, based on the astrological glyph for the planet. The whole structure is spun, and the tether increases the overall radius for the inhabited sections while saving weight.
A circular ship over the limb of Venus. Looking down the ship towards the Venusian clouds.

Thank you! It's been interesting to try to think of a design that also makes some amount of sense for the shape.

This is part of a project to create crewed spaceships for each of the planets based on their astrology glyphs.

To save weight, the inhabited portions of the ship are attached to a tether that would extend after spin-up to increase the radius. That way the rest of the structure could be built as minimalist as possible. The white cylinders are the engines.

The Virgo, my concept for a crewed mission to Venus sometime in the next century. The design is based on the astrology glyph for the planet. It uses rotational artificial gravity.
A ship in front of Venus. The ship is shaped like the symbol for Venus, with a big ring and then inhabited portions on a tether.

Imagine doing those absurdly difficult tracks from the 1999 game like this.

Can't believe this is real. It's been 12 years.

And I should point out that the right cat is as well. But he has two eyes.
