My shoes have been kicked off for a minute now, so I guess I'm long over due for an intro thread

I'm Edwin STATS Houghton, music journalist, editor, writer and curator. I also go by DJ Eddie STATS

I decided to hop on Twitch to salute one Michael Eugene Archer aka D’Angelo. I used to do a weekly Tues stream called JOYRiiiDE that I put to bed a while back bc of general life stuff. Reviving it for one night only. We’re calling it the Cruisin’ Edition. Come hang in the chat: twitch.tv/dee_phunk

What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.
Article (Nolan Feeney; TIME) excerpt reads: “Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen, D'Angelo writes in a statement about the album It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape there these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

“D’Angelo’s First Album in 14 Years Is Finally Here, and It’s Surprisingly Timely” via TIME.

Yes, yes! All of this...

My father died when he was 51, too. Right before he passed, I played D'Angelo's debut album for him. We'd argued about music a lot. He hated hip hop. "Young cats can't sing," etc.

Then I played "Cruisin'" for him.

Dad had to give it up. "He did his thang."

And he did.

As a Gen X kid obsessed with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & Prince who had Jazz and Blues playing all around but was drawn to Funk, we immediately identified with D’Angelo and clocked his influences…

He became OUR version. And now, he is one of the ancestors.

Rest in eternal peace.

An hour and 11-minute long mix of nothing but D'Angelo live tracks from various shows during the Brown Sugar and Voodoo eras. It's so well done. Also downloadable.

The clip above is from an impromptu two-man show that D'Angelo and Questlove did together called Soulquarians: Brothers In Arms at Brooklyn Bowl on March 4th, 2013. It sold out instantly. I was there. 🙏 Thankfully someone saved the audio for posterity. You can hear ppl losing their minds.

He deserved to grow old. He deserved the space to be more creative and share more art w/ the world. He deserved to be adorned in praise while he was still able to receive it in the physical. Luckily, music and spirit is eternal.

RIP Michael Eugene Archer aka D'ANGELO. 🕊️

A lot of what comes back as I revisit these moments is the friendship

Ahmir was my boss's boss, hardly a friend but in my observation he's that type of person who doesn't deal w/ emotions well, & mostly thru music

but anybody who was around these 2 men could see he + D were *true* brothers in arms

Nelson passed the mic to Questlove and asked him to speak on the recording, which Questo promised he would "very briefly," adding "because I *really want to play this record."

To which George replied: "I know you do."

I wish I could say i spoke to D enough to have insights into what made him tick but even in brief interactions you get a sense of his shyness, his faith, his absolute sincerity about what he was doing and why...he was a true believer and we are blessed for it

Most of all I will never forget sitting under the yellow-y lightbulbs of a tiny Carnegie Hall dressing room, talking to D'Angelo & Ahmir about how the music of Prince brought them together

...both in the beat itself and the rock guitar lick--for D's falsetto to ricochet off. The frenetic six-string work (which according to Questo is all D) directly channels the spirit of the brilliant Eddie Hazel."
