A cool thing about Bookshop is you can select any bookstore in the country to get the slice of the profit. And paying for shipping from USPS means it is less likely I am exploiting someone because they do have a union while using free shipping from Amazon means I am definitely exploiting someone.

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Notices were also sent to:

Lawfully present non-citizens facing reduction or ending of their benefits.

People impacted by new federal limits on energy assistance-based Standard Utility Allowance.

⁨📷⁩ ⁨What will happen when the shutdown ends?

If it's before Nov. 1:

We will work with our vendor to distribute SNAP benefits as close to the normal schedule as possible.

The sooner we have resolution, the more likely we can distribute benefits timely.

If it's after Nov. 1:

Benefits will be issued as quickly as possible. The timing depends on:

How quickly the federal government acts.

How rapidly the nation's payment systems can process the catch-up issuance.

If you’ve heard the term “en banc” recently and wondered what it means – we’ve got you!

“en banc” means the full court will review a decision - and that process has some unique features in the Ninth Circuit

How “en banc” works in the Ninth Circuit:

1. When a case comes before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, a randomly selected panel of 3 Ninth Circuit judges hears the case and makes a ruling.

2. After the ruling, an active Ninth Circuit judge or one of the parties in the case can ask the court to rehear the case en banc - i.e. rehear the case in front of a larger panel to give more judges an opportunity to weigh in.

How “en banc” works in the Ninth Circuit, pt. 2

3. After the request is made, all 29 active judges on the Ninth Circuit vote whether or not the Ninth Circuit should hear the case en banc.

4. If a majority of Ninth Circuit judges vote to hear the case en banc, 11 of the 29 active Ninth Circuit judges are randomly selected to rehear the case. If an en banc hearing occurs, the ruling from the prior three-judge panel is vacated and no longer has precedential effect.

Why the en banc process is unique in the Ninth Circuit:

Oregon is in the Ninth Circuit, which is the largest circuit court by geography, population, and number of judges. That’s why en banc in the Ninth Circuit includes just 11 of the 29 active judges - instead of all 29. (In other circuit courts, rehearing en banc occurs in front of all active judges.)
