Unexpectedly moved in the archive by the announcement of the christening of a newborn alleged Messiah in 1962, inviting everyone of good will but asking people to refrain from touching the girl: 'Even nice people carry germs, and even Divine Babies put their hands in their mouths.'

Day 320 of not regretting leaving Labour.

Reeves leads attack on the environment (which includes us!)

But bankers will get their bonuses more quickly.
Guardian headline: nature groups rebuke Reeves for “cynical” 11th hour planning bill changes. Guardian headline- UK bankers will get their hands on their bonuses more quickly.

75% turnout & 98% vote for strike speaks for itself, morale & conditions must be dire. Pay offer of 2.4%. UCEA take note (academic pay ‘offer’ - read, cut - is 1.4%)

I can't stop thinking about this photo...truly an awesome encapsulation of the political and aesthetic economy of early 20th c. Los Angeles. This is a 1939 shot of the MGM backlot in Culver City.

a photo of the MGM studio backlot, circa 1939. In the foreground, a faux-Buddhist movie prop sits amidst industrial cogs and piping. In the background, proliferating oil derricks.

I'll be speaking about the book @greenhouseuis.net on 20 October (online), @bookhaus.bsky.social on 29 October (in person, ticketed), at @uio.no in November, and @uofglasgow.bsky.social in December 🎤📚💡

It sure is! Thanks to everyone who helped me make this book. I'm reminiscing today about field trips to Orkney, Shetland & the Outer Hebrides, islands which swept me up in their windy history, and offered new perspectives on 'national' narratives & global challenges. (And plotting ways to return!)

For reasons, it would be v. helpful to have information from a broad range of academic and non-academic (incl. GLAM) users of the BBC Written Archives OTHER THAN historians, briefly on: 1) What you've used it for and 2) How the proposed changes would impact on your research.

Reposts welcomed.

struggling to budget both myself & a decent post-doc under the ukri grant caps (given the massive overheads unis charge) & wondering how others are managing. Then I see all the 0.4 fte for 15 months precarious post-docs being advertised & realise that’s the only way to do it. I hate it, thanks.

one of the astonishing things about working in a UK uni in the last decade is complete DISCONNECT between (on one hand) hostile media stories, ill informed govt policy, end of unis as we know them

and (on the other) the joyful work of actually talking w/students and discovering new things together

Whether 1970s Labour selling out their promise of state oil, Thatcherite privatisation, or this Blair-era gift to the royals, state energy decisions have consistently consolidated energy wealth in private hands.
dudleymarianna.bsky.social
It was a way to pay for the rising costs of the royal family (who requested more funds for eg. palace refits). But it was also a privatisation of public assets, and a feudalisation of sorts.

I write about this in Electric Wind. It was Blair’s govt who gave the Crown the right to licence offshore wind - (oil and gas and any other resources are licenced directly by govt). The Crown made more than £1billion last year alone. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...
