Figure 2 from the linked paper, showing our methodology workflow. We take the seafloor training imagery and split it based on substrate, depth, and seafloor angle. This is then patched down and processed using SAHI, which allows us to train an object detection model on a patch-level, retaining resolution. We then postprocess the detections, reprojecting them back to their location on the original image.

[New Paper] names Chaetoderma naga, a gigantic (>13 cm) new worm-mollusc from a cold seep! Like its sister-species C. shenloong, it probably relies on endosymbiotic bacteria for energy. We named it after Nāga, a snake-god from Asian mythologies!

Excited to share this work, out today in MBE! In polar fishes, we found that antifreeze protein genes expanded in copy number at low temperatures and contracted in the deep sea, highlighting a role of depth and pressure in AFP evolution.
