Book recommendation: Breath by James Nestor
VERY interesting weaving of how sinuses, chewing, mouth breathing, carbon dioxide, and so much more intersect to affect our health. Everything from crooked teeth to sinus infections to ADHD and more.

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

Book Rec
OUTLIVE, by Dr Peter Attia

This book has been practice changing for me.

I now talk with (most) of my patients about chronic disease prevention and healthy lifestyles on a +30y time horizon.

It’s well worth a read, especially if you want to manage your health in very unhealthy times.

Speaking of healthcare. Let's make @bsky.app the platform that fights misinformation. Some great follows are @drsusanoliver.bsky.social @jsm2334.bsky.social @therealtruther.bsky.social

Let's get them more followers and engagement than other platforms and let health science accounts find a home
Very weird. Based on my recent clinical encounters (Sanders County) I would expect something other than green for Montana 🤧😷🥴🤮🤒
I had the opportunity to listed to Dr. Ibrahim speak this past weekend. Highly promising green light therapy studies for chronic pain/migraines/fibromyalgia/PTSD. #IntegrativeMedicine #AWCIM
Green Light Therapy "Overall, green light exposure reduced the number of headache days per month by an average of about 60%. A majority of participants in the study reported a more than 50% reduction in headache days per month." In refractory migraine headache patients! #Medsky
Shining a Green Light on a New Preventive Therapy for Migraine
People who suffer from migraine are reducing their pain and improving their quality of life thanks to pain specialists at the University of Arizona Health Sciences and their green light research.

VERY interesting. Docs caring for patients with high social needs are more likely to be burned out? Or docs with less support to address social needs (do they do it themselves) are more burned out?

Hey #medsky #primarycaresky #wellness interested #burnout mitigators

If our wellness committees and C suites, and chief wellness officers and guru conferences are still putting out book clubs, special interest groups, meditation training, and new recognition events as burnout remedies .. -> 1/2
Right? This one was memorable because it was so egregious. But it happens a lot where the inpatient stay is initially denied. So much stress for patients to not know if their insurance will cover them and ridiculous waste of clinician and staff time preparing peer-to-peers and appeals
I think this is a great question. Certainly insurance isn’t meant to provide unlimited care. But it seems like it’s gone overboard with denials. People are entitled to use their insurance for medical needs. Some insurances seem to routinely not be holding up their end of the bargain
Hospitalist
Sodium <110. Symptomatic. 3% saline infusion. Expected time to correct this safely was estimated at 3 days, with intensive labs and fluid monitoring. Admitted to ICU status. Insurance denied, stated it should be observation.

Hey #MedSky I'm writing a long-form piece on how bad prior authorization has become, and how burdensome it is on patients and docs. Can you share:
—A story (without PHI)
—The amount of time/$$ you spend
—The most ridiculous thing you've had to argue for
—etc

(And please share this post)

Fun fact: The 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵-𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 radiology report in 1896 started with the 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻!

Dr. Francis H. Williams wrote: 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑋-𝑟𝑎𝑦 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑤𝑠 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑙𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑠𝑖𝑧𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑘𝑖𝑑𝑛𝑒𝑦. And then added technical details after. 🩻

A timeless structure—why bury the lede?

This is sad and ridiculous
