We've currently got a scandal one county up because an officer let his K9 die in a hot car when he went home to take a nap and now the entire department is doing the "we investigated ourselves and found no evidence of wrongdoing" thing.

I work in an incredibly niche field and every paper I publish builds on the ones before. There is absolutely nothing wrong with citing yourself and I never understood this critique, either.

I think Haldeman's Forever War is an incredibly important piece of the SciFi canon with really meaningful things to say about war and loss and alienation and holy hell would that not be something I'd ever hand to someone new to science fiction.
