Trust me. I am watching these cases very closely for your exact concerns. This administration has irrevocably f*ed up with the armed forces. They will never acknowledge it publicly but they are scared of the protests because they are not confident they have military backing.

Yes read the amicus brief for Oregon vs Trump. They stated that the administration using them to police regular people is contrary to their mission and posses a danger to the public and the guardsmen. It's pretty powerful stuff.

Further context, this gives a good portion of the active duty folks grounds for conscientious objection. The courts determined that the administration is not reliable. As to the fishing boats, those are drone strikes ordered directly by Stephen Miller. Rubio wouldn't do them.

I'm not saying that this is some shield of unity or whatever, but it gives context to the wider narrative from the Republicans about the No Kings protests. They can't count on the military to be their thugs and they have lost credibility with the courts and top brass.

This didn't get enough mainstream media coverage. The Guard gave their opinion in writing about being deployed to intimidate protesters. It's not ambiguous.

Our experience as military leaders has taught us that this commitment keeps our military
stronger and our communities safer. Any domestic deployment that fails to comply with the
foundational principles of the Posse Comitatus Act and similar authorities5
poses multiple risks to
the core mission of the Guard, the well-being of the troops, and the safety of the communities they
are committed to protect. First, deploying military personnel in the context of domestic law
enforcement diverts them from their primary mission, which is to train and to be ready to fight and
win the nation’s wars and protect communities after disasters. Accordingly, such assignments
come at the expense of local, state, and national safety, as well as troop morale. Second, activeduty National Guard personnel are neither intended nor specifically trained to conduct domestic
law enforcement operations. This poses a danger to the safety of both the troops and the public.
Third, use of federal military personnel in the context of law enforcement operations should be a
last resort to avoid the politicization of the military, which inevitably erodes public trust, hurts
recruitment, and undermines troop morale. Peaceful protests of government actions are
constitutionally protected political speech deserving of the highest protection, not intimidation by
the military

Yes they used this as an argument against deployment in Portland, their brass stated that if they're deployed it will be to protect protesters not ICE. It's a big part of the judges ruling for that case and in Illinois.
