Look to the past
Our work (see below), together with those of other colleagues, is highlighted in the editorial of the last issue of @natrevbiodiv.nature.com and inspired its cover
Thrilled and thankful to see that stuff

Here is the place where life emerged from water onto land – traces of a tetrapod can be found there. It can be reached from Kraków in just an hour and a half.

The 8th European Congress for Conservation Biology will take place in Leiden, NL! They will explore how #biodiversity can be safeguarded effectively in the long term. First call is open now! Check out: eccb26leiden.eu/calls/ for more info, we are looking forward to your contributions!
Today, late in the afternoon we have officially closed the 8th #ForumCarpaticum. This year in Bratislava at the @comeniusuni.bsky.social . Great event, fantastic speakers and lots of energy around. Hope to meet again in 2027 in another Carpathian country!
Together with @egrabska.bsky.social we organised a session on historical ecology and geography: new perspectives for conservation and management. It was a great pleasure to listen to all the contributions. There is a huge potential in historical data, which might be used to protect the Carpathians!
Old-growth forests, remote sensing, 19th century forest practices, traditional landscape, large carnivores, LiDAR data, invasive species, palaeoclimate, holocene climate change, grassland change - a short list of topics we touched during #FC2025

This was definitely one of the most interesting pieces I have ever worked on. The fascinating diversity of perspectives and the wealth of sources made it really unique. Special thanks to @laenavarro.bsky.social and @chikichanka.bsky.social !
Fresh off the press! Our perspective in @natrevbiodiv.nature.com discusses the wealth of information on biodiversity contained in historical sources, and its integration for long-term ecological knowledge and biodiversity conservation. A thread on the paper and what led to it:

Wolves and bears as scapegoats in the political struggle
Science has been ignored in recent decisions on large carnivore management in Europe. All left to emotions, the pathway to authoritarianism

OK, so we decided not do skip a GeoTdF year, but this stage is so boring that it's begging for some geo-info!

We're riding along the North Sea coast towards Dunquerque. But even as recent as 20.000 years ago, there was no coast here! During the last ice age, the Channel was dry!
There is no gender-based discrimination in Polish Road Cycling Championship in media coverage. No media mention either Women or Men medalists...
So: Kasia Niewiadoma and Rafał Majka.

WUI matters not only for the wildfires. What is even more interesting, in the Carpathians, past WUI matters much more in carnivore damage prediction than current WUI. Check out our analysis focused on 🐺 and 🐻!
Rožmberk is the largest fishpond in the world. It's area is 4.9-6.5 km2, depending on the water level. It is one of the five hundred fish ponds, constructed from the 13th century onwards in Třeboňsko region in South Bohemia.

Thank to beavers we still have some water in the forests.

The last time the Vistula flowed here was at least a few hundred years ago. Maybe even a few thousand. But in the forest you can see its proximity.
