Snickers X-Treme (2006-2007, 2014-2016): This Snickers bar variant removed the nougat, kept the caramel, and then doubled the peanuts, which apparently made the bars more radical. Saw a 2010 release in the UK, and a special 2015 Halloween fun size release as Snickers "XScream"

A Snickers bar is cut open next to it, to reveal a filling of only peanuts and caramel A red fun-size Snickers wrapper with an image of a grimacing ghost and the word "XScream". Yes, but there's also and earthy warmth to the flavor name and food image that hasn't been common in the world of increasingly sterile, minimalist packaging that we've seen over the last 20 years, which is unfortunate

Skittles Dips (2020-2023): Classic Skittles fruit candy, but covered in a thick, "creamy yogurt"-flavored coating.
A red bag with the rainbow Skittles logo. A red Skittle is seen being covered in a cascade of white, creamy substance. Four half-covered Skittles are lined up at the bottom

Spooky Spectacular Count Chocula (2000-2000): A limited-edition Count Chocula variant that featured marshmallows shaped like bats, "books of magic", moons, and bubbling cauldrons. The real kicker was the "spooky" lenticular cut-out mask on each box. Frankenberry and Boo-Berry versions were also made
A cereal box with the Count Chocula logo and an extreme closeup of the Count's face, which features him wearing a purplish lenticular mask over his eyes, complete with a weary-looking bat sitting on the bridge of his nose. A bowl of cereal and a lineup of new marshmallows is at the bottom

Denny's Lonely Mountain Treasure (2012-2012): Part of the promotional menu for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey", this item consisted of seed cake French toast cut into 9 squares, and served in a bowl with a side of cream cheese icing for dipping.

Yup, they sold their license in 2005 after declaring bankruptcy, and those baked goods and snacks are still going strong in grocery stores 20 years later!

In 2005, the Bill Knapp's name and branding was sold to Awrey Bakery, which had provided baked goods to the chain in their later years. Awrey went on to produce a line of baked goods and snacks under the "Bill Knapp's" name, which can still be found in grocery stores today

In a move of desperation, Bill Knapp's launched a new campaign in 2001, called "The Tradition is Back!", in which they brought back the original menu and traditional decor. It was too little too late, and they filed for bankruptcy in March 2002.

More and more shortcuts were used heading into the 2000's, including bulk frozen meat, and egg powder in place of cracked eggs. At the same time, Bill Knapp's continued raising prices. Older patrons felt alienated by the changes, and young people never bought into any of it

Another part of the rebrand was the food quality. Until the late 90's, everything was proudly made from scratch in a local commissary and brought to restaurants daily. To cut costs, local wholesale providers were used for pre-packaged foods. They also began using Lipton soup and Kraft mac n cheese

Bill Knapp's rebrand consisted of replacing the old-timey decor with wacky, colorful shower curtains between booths along with arcade cabinets, wall-mounted TVs and wild, colorful paint designs on the walls. They began playing loud rock music over the sound systems

However, by the 90's, their primary clientele were elderly folks, and the chain began to panic. In 1998 the original ownership team sold the chain to a new owner based out of California, who gave the chain a very late-90's rebrand, with the "That was then, this is WOW" campaign

Couples celebrating a wedding anniversary at Bill Knapp's were given a whole chocolate cake to take home, and the restaurant's sound system would play Bing Crosby's version of "The Anniversary Song" while the cake was being brought out
