This is an article that I've wanted to write for over a year, and I finally got the chance to do it!

Atproto Ethos is a deep dive into how we think about protocol design - its influences, the core innovations, and the opinionated takes that we've adopted
Atproto Ethos - AT Protocol
A deep dive into the philosophical and aesthetic principles underlying the design of AT Protocol.

i've definitely been on the cusp of falling asleep and then have to grab my phone and jot something down in the notes app cause my brain figured it out in the background

truly the only cure

"can you tell the difference between a meaningful and serendipitous moment in the real world and the howl of 1000s of gpus trying to optimize for you lingering on your phone for 0.5s longer?"

"can you?"

i think the only way for atproto to succeed is for us to show what apps can do when every app sees every other app's public data, and they share an identity system. no technical or sociological argument is as convincing as seeing seamless interop and the lighthearted competitive landscape it unlocks
dholms.xyz
i agree this is a very good idea

after suffering several terrible tragedies my sister & i caveat every text like "call me when you can - not bad news"

except when it is actually bad news we say "call me when you can - bad news but not death/sickness"

Dads love to text "Call me when you have a minute" with no way to tell if your family has suffered a terrible tragedy, or if he just needs help with the router.

yeah and it's actually worse to do that at a slightly higher node in the tree. like create a bunch of keys with 8 leading zeros. easy enough to mine for and those intermediate height nodes end up getting included in way more proofs

oh dude let's go

Want to remark on a sentiment I've heard from the AT dev community ‒ in specific words, even, from @bmann.ca, @knowtheory.net, and @rude1.blacksky.team, which I'll likely botch here:

Lead with joy, not fear.

I think that belief shows up a lot, and it's really affected me for the better!

tangled runs lexhub? 🥺

i'd probably recommend most devs use something like supabase for a small/medium sized app

would be down for a tech talk!
dholms.xyz
yea i totally agree on slices, i'm very excited about it

i view the comparison kinda like "supabase vs express". they're both tools for making apis easier to build but one is a tool for devs to use flexibly in their stack. the other is a productized full-stack solution

735 in my atproto, but i think i cleaned it up at some point
dholms.xyz
hmm i think the sync tool has a much narrower job

it's trying to be a lightweight/flexible offloader for doing the sync bit of AT and then hand off control to the application

my understanding is slices is a much more full stack solution that handles record-indexing & api generation
dholms.xyz
you can say that again

sending strength & love 💙

sounds pretty incredible tbh

i'll save it for a gloomy saturday this winter lol
