Article fresh off the print (no paywall)! The tl;dr is in the quoted thread. We advance a measure of replication distance to capture differences btw an original study & its replications. We also discuss how statistics needs to go beyond ideal assumptions to serve science better.

These are the kinds of things I think about when people complain about academia being too liberal.

Not to pick on Per, but I’ve never understood the snark about “self citation”.

If, as an academic, you aren’t creating an inter-related body of work that builds towards some larger understanding of a problem, what even is the point?

The true academic method: overthink, underdeliver, cite yourself.

Academics joking around about execution by firing squad in the context of academic misconduct wasn't in my bingo card today. This community never fails to horrify me.

I think critiquing the art is ok. It's a personal thing and everyone gets to make up their own mind and form their own relationship with it. Criticizing others for having a different relationship with the artistic object is what I find despicable. And yes, that also holds for other forms than books.

He'd like that very much thank you!

Or that the delight *is* him!

Been craving Hünkar Beğendi (Sultan's Delight)*. Finally made it for dinner. Comfort food at its best! Also the fresh picked olives we ordered arrived today; they're gorgeous. We'll brine them next.

*Bechameled roasted eggplant puree with stewed meat (typically lamb but I used chicken)
In a white plate, eggplant puree topped with peppery chicken stew in tomato sauce. A large box of raw green olives, some of which have turned red.

People who criticize others for their book choices don't enjoy reading as much as feeling superior by associating themselves with the "right" kinds of literature. If someone tells you they got something out of the unlikeliest of books, it's better to believe them than to judge them.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

Lol that immediately makes me think of the dripping out of my clarinet's bell, and as a short person of questionable cuteness, ewwwww!!!

Indeed! I thought that was crazy. Yet he sees my progress better than I can, obvs.

Funny thing: When I changed the reed, my Clarion register tones have suddenly started to come out polyphonic, with a smooth, deep low tone underneath. Katsuya thought that was very cool and very difficult to do. I just wish I'd done it on purpose 😅
devezer.bsky.social
At today's lesson, the instructor suggested that I try a reed that's two sizes thicker than the one I've been using and we both were surprised at how well it worked. We played a lot of duets. My sight reading is improving so much now that I don't have to struggle with everything else.

Yup kinda same. I was pressing the holes so hard that my knuckles were turning white. My embouchure was too firm (which is normally not a beginner issue at all). I was grabbing the instrument way too hard etc. Yoga also helps with relaxation. Also practicing in front of a mirror.

Exception: if the "dessert" is a cheese plate, by all means, dazzle me!
devezer.bsky.social
Even the driest cider is rarely dry enough for me to want to have it with dessert tbh.

I tried making sense of why this idea popped up in my brain all of a sudden. My only answer is: Monday 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hate that sweet wines are paired with dessert. Sweet wine *is* dessert. I don't need this. I need contrast. I need balance. That's why espresso (or even regular black coffee) works great with desserts. I don't want sugar rush. I wanna be able to finish my meal feeling complete and content.

It's been two years of problem solving until I actually got to start being able to play for any meaningful amount of time. I still lack finger fluency, don't know all the notes in the chromatic scale on 3.5 octaves, struggle with register transitions, etc. But at least I have endurance now!

Besides the actual practice, what greatly improved my clarinet practice:
1. Breath builder: Pure magic!!
2. Yoga: For better posture and neck comfort
3. Weights: Stronger the arms, lighter the feel of the instrument
4. A well-adjusted thumb rest: No more wrist or thumb pain
5. A practice routine
