It really is like no other comic you've read, I'm pretty sure, and Stipan makes everyone and everything -- zombies, humans, ruined cities -- beautiful and heartbreaking and funny. It's a strange mix that I genuinely think only he could handle.

wrote the first draft of the first issue script while we were making 20th Century Men (around issue 4, I think). The truth is I never stopped working with @stipanmorian.bsky.social but it's great to have the work out there, and under a banner with such a rich history of great books

It's funny, and hideous, and beautiful, and sad and, I think, deeply human. It's something we could only do in comics, for a lot of reasons, but above all, comics is a medium where the ugly can be beautiful. And that's what this is. It's beautiful-ugly-comedy-tragedy.

We'll learn all about zombie culture, and a wild cast of characters (Poke's best friend is Mushrooms-Grow-Up-All-Over-Like-Little-Forests, and there are Horde members like Legs-Without-Top-Part-But-Doesn't-Let-That-Stop-Him), as Poke struggles with the ethics of being a zombie.

Stipan, Matt and I are kind of doing here what we did with 20th Century Men and superheroes, but with zombies; taking the archetypes, themes, and visual language of zombie fiction and trying to do something new with it, telling the most human stories we can.

One day, a zombie named Poke's (full name: Mouse-Pokes-Golfball-Out-of-Head-Hole) heart starts beating, and he begins to wonder if there isn't more to unlife than hunting & killing & eating the Living. He has to hide this from the rest of the Horde, lest he himself become food.

In Bleeding Hearts, the zombies have won and are the dominant life form. The living are scarce and hunted.

Zombies have their own culture; language, morality, sense of humor, rituals, culture fears.

My friend Alvaro Martinez Bueno described it as "zombies with feelings".
