Same. My big sister is a US citizen and has lived in LA since her 20s. She’s had enough and is selling up and moving back here. Which is a great relief.

Yes, all pretty good now, but work until a few months ago work was patchy and I had a couple of years managing my 98 yo mother’s life as she succumbed to dementia and frailty. She passed away in May. Life is less stressful now but there’s always something else round the corner!

I did go on a recruitment drive with my penultimate tweet last November. I think 4 of these opened an account here within 24 hours. I thought producers would follow but it didn’t really happen. And I don’t want to go back.

It’s interesting to see some cohorts - chemists and other academic disciplines, for example - move over here in their entirety. I can’t help feeling that we wouldn’t need a huge migration of the wine world to BlueSky to reach a critical mass that would make it a more significant community.

Yes, I think a lot have generally gone quiet everywhere. When Twitter turned bad, they just switched off social media as they didn’t have the inclination to start again somewhere else. Or they just fell back on Insta / Facebook. And meanwhile Musk is a terrible person profiting from being terrible.

And it’s monetised and they can probably leverage it for speaking engagements, publishing deals and other paying gigs. But at least they don’t try to take the moral high ground.

What I don’t understand is the people with large follower accounts on Twitter who opened BlueSky accounts, got a couple of thousand followers here and the same level of engagement, and then sloped back to Twitter where they struggle to get 10 likes from 70K followers. I guess it’s Musk’s money.

I pretty much follow everyone who posts about wine here except those who have made their dislike of me clear over the years, like the American former Robert Parker guy, the American Swiss guy, the San Diego creepy guy and the Texan sommelier guy. Oh dear, it seems I have a type.

Yes, that’s probably true. But given the absolute state of Twitter, I can’t understand why the UK Government is still there. Meanwhile, I would be very happy if we just had a slightly wider, more active wine community here. It’s nice, but sometimes it feels as if there are only half a dozen of us.

I stopped posting on Twitter in January. I don’t mind different opinions but it had become warped towards promoting hateful, intolerant voices at the expense of decent, moderate people. I still check it occasionally but do wish all the people I like would just leave it and use their accounts here.

I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter

Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them
