The Co-Chairs of the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria, Ngarra Murray and Rueben Berg, have addressed the Legislative Assembly ahead of the debate on the Statewide Treaty Bill 2025. Their speeches are available to watch at youtu.be/lpizTmXn0HA.

@rachelpaynemp.bsky.social and I were joined today by former HH Magistrate Tony Parsons to call out the Allan Government’s failure on cannabis law reform.

Continuing to arrest 4000 Victorians a year for cannabis possession is bad policy and worse politics. #SpringSt

It flies in the face of evidence-based policy, community sentiment, and common sense.

We will spend every minute of the next 13 months reminding the government of this.
davidettershankmp.bsky.social
Yet at a time when the government is cutting vital services, it is willing to waste many millions locking up thousands of our fellow Victorians for the victimless crime of possessing a bit of cannabis, a disproportionate number of whom are young people, First Nations and culturally diverse people.

The Allan Labor Government is walking away from sensible cannabis law reform. To put it mildly, we’re pissed.

Sadly, the government has made this decision out of fear of losing a law-and-order election.

On Saturday, I teamed up with the No Sunbury Incinerator campaign at the Sunbury Show, speaking with locals about the serious risks posed by the proposed waste incinerator.

Many were not aware of it and were shocked by the whole thing. #Sunbury #NoSunburyIncinerator #CleanAir

It’s important that we get the word out about this waste incinerator. Not a lot of people in Sunbury are aware of the project and its impact on the community.

I don't intend to take down the posts and I intend to continue to speak up about the proposed incinerator. I look forward to working with residents in the greater Sunbury area, to ensure that it doesn’t become Melbourne’s default waste site.
davidettershankmp.bsky.social
To be clear, we are not encouraging people to break the law, to enter the site unlawfully or to create a risk to workers on the site. That said, it’s worth noting that there was not a lot of signage that indicated to myself and my staff that safety was potentially at risk.

Sadly, HiQ have requested that our video talking about the Sunbury incinerator be taken down after they alleged that our ‘unauthorised entry to the site posed a significant health and safety breach’. 🧵

🚨 STOP THE SUNBURY INCINERATOR! 🚨
The government is considering a proposal to burn 750,000 TONS of waste every year near Sunbury.

❌ 300+ truck movements a day
❌ Toxic emissions
❌ Health risks for locals

📢 Say NO. Speak up now!

It was wonderful to catch some of Melbourne Telangana Forum's Bathukamma 2025 festivities at Parliament today — a wonderful celebration of flowers and community. 🌸

But let’s be clear: it is a statement of fact that Lily D'Ambrosio MP, Bronwyn Halfpenny MP, and Ella George MP have all voiced strong opposition to proposed waste incinerators in their electorates.

So nevertheless, the question remains: how will other MPs respond to their communities' concerns?
davidettershankmp.bsky.social
Unfortunately, the question was ruled out of order under standing orders that prohibit 'accusations' against other members. Of course, I respect the President's ruling.

davidettershankmp.bsky.social
Question Time got a little heated yesterday when I raised concerns about Labor MPs who have stood with their communities in opposing waste incinerators — rallying against the government's plan to roll out waste-to-energy plants across Victoria. 🧵

Let’s walk together towards a better future for all. 🖤💛❤️

This Treaty marks a powerful step forward. It’s a chance to begin to right the wrongs of the past, to recognise Indigenous sovereignty, and to build a future grounded in respect, equity, and most importantly — healing. (4/5)

Australia is a vibrant, multicultural nation — admired around the world — but for too long, our failure to reconcile with First Nations people has been a deep tear in the fabric of our society. (3/5)

Today, I congratulated Sheena Watt, Co-Chair of the Victorian Reconciliation Action Plan Steering Committee, for the important role she's played in getting us to this point. (2/5)

A historic Day for Victoria. We will soon become the first Australian state to enshrine a First Peoples Treaty into law — a landmark moment on the path towards truth, justice, and reconciliation. #SpringSt 🧵 (1/5)

... all to feed an incinerator that needs 50x more waste than the entire City of Hume produces.

We’re not ideologically opposed to WTE — we’re opposed to rushing into it without proper scrutiny, without community consent, and without considering the long-term impacts.
