2. Removing people and settling on their land reminds them of the parts of their own history they're most proud of.

This reminds me of something from way back in the 90s, after the Balkan wars while Milosevic was still running Serbia. There were protests every day in Belgrade but most people who lived outside the big cities only got their news from Serbian state TV. Serbian state TV didn't cover the protests. 1/
