It's funny, in secondary school the art teacher told me I'd like Hokusai really early on and I've just come round to appreciating his approach now, 20 years later.

They portrayed Kabuki and sumo stars of the day and sold prints for affordable prices, much like the football art trend.

Ukiyo-e artists like Hokusai and Utamaro managed to present things in a very concise way. Their work shares similarities with modern vector pieces in terms of solid areas of colour hemmed in by uniform lines. The style of work speaks to me primarily because of the subject matter.

I'm trying something new, here's a thread that acts more like my sketchbook leading up to a piece of art. It will give a quick historical overview and info about process as well as a time lapse of the drawing.

maybe yeah, if it gets framed then it has a bit more permanence but i'd say it doesn't compare to a charcoal piece an artist has made and then held up to look at
