In "What Works in Community News," Ellen Clegg and I examine about a dozen independent local news outlets in nine parts of the country. We hope it will inspire folks who live in news deserts to take their information needs into their own hands. #journalism #localnews

South of Boston folks: I'll be speaking on "News and Democracy in a Time of Crisis" at the Stoughton Public Library on Monday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. This free and open event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Sharon-Stoughton.

Not to disagree, but the Pentagon isn't City Hall, and it's hard to imagine you have the same kind of casual access that you would covering municipal government.

I was once whining to a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist that one of my key sources had cut me off. She said: "Access is overrated." And indeed it is. The press is not likely to miss out on any crucial Pentagon stories just because they can't roam the corridors.

My theory is that Ed Markey ultimately won't run, and Moulton's trying to get a jump on what will be a crowded primary field. (I'll admit that Markey has not made any moves toward pulling out.) #mapoli

It doesn't matter to me if it's dial-up or broadband, but I think of a BBS as something that comprises message boards and pretty much nothing else. But not Usenet. Usenet is Usenet, not a BBS. Boston had something called Citinet in the late ’80s, and I was a user.

#mapoli has one of the least transparent, least productive legislatures in the country, writes filmmaker Aaron Singer for @cwbeacon.bsky.social. To his list I would add the failure to create a local news commission or to pass bills that would help support community journalism.
Why the Democratic supermajority on Beacon Hill won't pass Democratic bills - CommonWealth Beacon
Sooner or later, enough people will learn how democracy in Massachusetts is a lie. When they do, leadership’s iron grip will crack, not because those in power wanted to change, but because voters fina...

Probably some national lobbying group since Xiarhos says it's based on similar legislation in 22 other states.

The nonprofit arm of the Provincetown Independent, based in super-expensive Outer Cape Cod, is raising money to provide housing for young reporters who can't afford to live there. mailchi.mp/localjournal...

That may be specific to OneNote rather than to note-taking apps in general.

Anyone using DEVONthink? I played with it a few years ago. It's $100 to purchase — no annual subscription. Evernote is now up to $130 a year.

And it seems like every other alternative out there is glopped up with AI (not that Evernote isn't) and a boatload of unnecessary features that I don't want to learn, even if it's just learning how to avoid them.

Nothing makes you appreciate Evernote quite like trying to switch to OneNote. I'd be fine with Apple Notes or SimpleNote except that there's no nesting. One level is all you get.

So what are they going to call Apple TV?

Rikleen is running, isn't he? No one is stopping him from primarying Markey. Maybe he'll even get some endorsements.
dankennedy.net
Oh, please. "Enemy of democracy" is certainly within the bounds of reasonable hyperbole. Rikleen is literally arguing that it's not fair for Markey to accept endorsements from elected Democrats. I don't have a dog in this race, and I think Markey needs think about his age, but that's ridiculous.

On the very rare occasions when I've watched any evening network newscast and have caught ABC, it strikes me as "Local News from Around the Country." I prefer CBS and NBC. Actually, I prefer @pbsnews.org.
