On this lovely weekend day, with my spine having given out (off to emergency care, I think - bleh), I want to be like this netsuke cat from Japan, without a care in the world. So here he is for #caturday.

The netsuke is a toggle. Japanese men used netsuke to suspend various pouches and containers from their sashes by a silk cord. Netsuke had to be small and not too heavy, yet bulky enough to do the job. They needed to be compact with no sharp protruding edges, yet also strong and hard-wearing. Above all, they had to have the means for attaching a cord. Netsuke were made in a variety of forms, the most widely appreciated being the <i>katabori</i> (shape carving), a three-dimensional carving, such as this one in the form of a cat dozing on an oval disc, with its tail curled over the back part of its body.

Cats were introduced into Japan in the late 9th century, and quickly became a favorite part of their culture, right into the modern era with pop culture phenomena like Hello Kitty and cat cafés.

I just have to post this #iceage masterpiece from time to time: A tiny (3.7 cm) but amazing figurine of a woolly mammoth carved in mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago.

Found in the Vogelherd cave on the Swabian Jura, south-west Germany.

There is text above the image of the plastic bottle which reads “Ancient skull found on archaeological dig is proof of our alien origins”. Having read the text, at first glance the plastic bottle looks similar to an alien skull. The body of the bottle looks like a long skull,the handle looks like a nose, and the indents with shadow either side of the handle look like eyes. An example of pareidolia!

Another #Etruscan gem. This bust is a fragment of a statuette depicting the god Hermes (Turms) or the hero Perseus (Ferse), identified by the remains of wings emerging from either side of his head. Beautiful modeling, and quite a heavy jaw, with inlaid silver eyes. 🏺

Bronze bust of Hermes (Etruscan Turms) or Perseus (Etruscan Ferse), the eyes inlaid with silver. Identified by remains of wings emerging from either side of his head. He has a very pouty lower lip and a large softly rounded jaw. This head was seemingly once part of a large statuette, as you can see from the rough edges around the bottom of the neck, as if it were torn away from the larger sculpture.

#FindsFriday: A #Roman amber flask, from Aquileia, dating 1st/2nd c. AD.
Aquileia's position at the end of a main amber trade route resulted in its becoming a centre for the carving and distribution of Baltic amber across the Roman Empire.
