I like complicated conversations about rewilding, housing, localism and sustainable transport. Fuelled by rage about the nature crisis. Sustained by all the people doing something about it.

There’s no clearer way to show the people in power how important rewilding is than turning up on the doorstep of Holyrood with a hundred campaigners... and making some noise. 📣

Tomorrow, let’s call on Scotland's politicians to #StopStallingStartRewilding! 🌱🐾🌊🪸

We love this video as a quick explainer of the role of beavers in wildfire prevention.

That's exactly why we're calling for of them!

We're on track to have a hundred people standing side by side outside the Scottish Parliament next month - calling on the Scottish Government to stop stalling and start rewilding. 🌱💚

Room for a few more (particularly if you've got a good costume!).

By scrapping plans for a Galloway National Park, the Scottish Government has again proved it can't successfully plot a path to a wilder Scotland.

We need leadership – not another retreat from meaningful action.

🔴 NEW: A bid to release beavers in the Highlands was delayed after intensive lobbying by farmers and landowners prompted an intervention by the local MSP and deputy first minister, Kate Forbes.

People of colour and Indigenous peoples across the world are facing the worst effects of a climate and nature emergency which they didn’t cause 🌍

Yet their struggles have been repeatedly ignored by people in positions of power, often with deliberate intent.

I love cycling at night (such quiet streets!) but the concentration of absolute roasters racing along narrow streets is definitely higher than in the daytime.

It's World Gaelic Week - so I'm resharing the rewilding video that brought me the most joy from last year: here's the amazing Hector reading extracts from the #RewildingNation Charter in Gaelic.

Glad to see the Natural Environment Bill is here.

Without the detail (to follow in subsequent legislation) it's too soon to say if it'll lead to the recovery of Scotland's land and seas.

We need clear, ambitious and updatable targets for Scotland's ecosystems.

Support for lynx reintroduction in Scotland is up 9 percentage points since 2020. In rural areas, many, many more people support lynx reintroduction than oppose it.

How popular and how well-proven does rewilding need to be before Scotland's government embraces it?

We're told it's a flat 'no' to lynx reintroduction - but a poll released today shows that 61% of people in Scotland want a well-managed, legal reintroduction of lynx.

So what's the bar?

🤷‍♀️
Really interesting - and I see some parallels with large-scale nature restoration or rewilding:

."..slow progress in addressing these challenges is linked to shared biases that prevent people and institutions from judging [x] objectively and dispassionately"
Join the dots: let's have land reform for nature, restoring ecosystems while building community resilience.

The government needs to tackle this head on instead of making policy and legislation based on vibes.

Support rewilding. Diversify land ownership.

#NatureEmergency #Rewilding #LandReform
4. We have demand from the population to restore nature at scale *and* to be more involved in both decisions about land use and land ownership.

(treesforlife.org.uk/80-percent-o...)
1. We have a depleted natural environment.

2. We have a concentrated land ownership pattern.

3. We have a funding and financing system for large-scale nature restoration that's tricky for all, but best navigated by large landholdings and/or by projects with shorter-term, clearer outputs.

And...
Articles like this one from @washingtonpost.com fail to connect the dots on land reform and rewilding, as well as misunderstanding what rewilding is by mixing it up with how it's funded.

Here are four of the dots that we need to draw some lines between...

⬇️
‘Green lairds’ are buying vast estates in Scotland for carbon credits
New investors in “rewilding” want to plant forests, save butterflies and make money.

In Edinburgh? Live for or work on rewilding? Grab a drink with fellow rewilders next Thursday - message me for a link with the details.

(Thanks to my fellow organisers for making sure this happens again - informal spaces for connecting are so important but it's been hard to find time!).

(Would love to be wrong, obviously. Surprise me! Please! 🙏😻)
John Swinney has ruled out his government reintroducing lynx: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Given we've just over a year of the current government left, this is not a surprise.

This isn't a government that will do anything surprising on ecological restoration between now and the next election.
