As scary as all of this is, I cannot stress how important the following is:

Live. Live and find happiness where you can.

Pay attention and help where you can, but don't let these terrible people occupy your mind 24/7, they don't deserve it and it's exactly what they want, you scared/unhappy.

If they're willing to be violent against us at the protest, not going isn't going to stop them being violent towards you in the future, only empower them more.

And just a reminder, Be as Nonviolent as possible this Saturday. Don't help them sell their narrative, stay united, stay strong, be smart.

3. Even if it's real, and the threat of violence is there (which again, is not the most likely scenario) then that makes it more important we go out there, not less. We have to be willing to be brave right now.

In preparation for this Saturday's No Kings Protest, here are some great safety tips from last No Kings Protest.

I did my best to compile as many protest safety notes as possible into a one page foldout zine! Coincidentally…it seems the file has breached containment…like it’s available for anyone to print or hand out 👀⚖️

toonyart.com/s/PSZine.pdf
The cover spread from a one page zine printout. The left (back cover) features images of a scale and gavel, with notes on First Amendment and filming rights, and the advice to “shut the fuck up.”

On the right is the cover, a megaphone with the title text “PROTEST SAFELY.” Behind it are faceless protestors. The subtitle notes, “A brief collection of tips from around the internet.” A spread from one page zine printout.
On the left is an illustration of a protestor with the title “What to Wear,” including a helmet, goggles, ear plugs, gloves, a mask, a backpack, and layers/long sleeves/pants. Each have additional notes explaining their use.

On the right is “What to Bring,” featuring illustrations of a backpack, money, water bottles, a mask, a granola bar and bag of trail mix, a first aid kit, folded shirt and pants, and an ID, with “DIY Defense” listed underneath it showing one protestor using a luggage case, one holding a trash can lid, and one using an open umbrella as a shield. A spread from one page zine printout.
On the left is “Protect Your Identity,” advising to cover up identifying features, avoiding photography of protesters, deactivating biometric phone-unlocking tools, and writing emergency contact and counsel numbers on your arm.

On the right is “Be Like Water,” the motto of the 2019 Hong Kong protests, and the text “BEWARE THE BAIT” with images of a palette of bricks and a masked man holding a crowbar toward a protestor with a sign, “Psst, free crowbar?” encouraging the reader not to engage with traps and undercover agents. A spread from one page zine printout featuring the hazards of protest opposition, including tear gas, rubber bullets, and LRAD sound cannons and flash bangs. Caution tape images accompany the text explaining the dangers of each, how to flush out eyes that have been maced/etc, and how to extinguish a gas canister with a traffic cone.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I'll see you there! (unlikely, because hopefully it'll be big enough the chances of us interacting are small)

This does absolutely matter, Dick Durban was one of the Senators who last time helped break the filibuster to avoid shutdown. If you live in Illinois, make it clear what you want from your elected officials.

❗ Illinoisans, we need our Democratic senators Dick Durbin & Tammy Duckworth to HOLD THEIR GROUND. Dems must continue opposing ANY budget deal that lets Trump's healthcare cuts take effect or hands him a blank check to keep terrorizing our communities.

Take 1 min to email them via our easy form ⤵️

Our Senators need to hear from their constituents that we want them to fight like hell. Push Senators Durbin and Duckworth to be bold and help strengthen their backbone

Times are tough right now, but dang, it's fun to be a Chicago Cubs fan right now, a lot to be happy about (also ecstatic that PCA had a great game, love that kid).

Here's hoping they have a great series against the Brewers, the post season continues!

Go Cubs Go!

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. Except it doesn’t bend on its own—it bends because we pull it in the direction of justice. What keeps me hopeful during times like these is being surrounded by people who are doing just that.
curiousvalkyrie.bsky.social
I don't expect others to do that, it's not always easy or even right, but it's what I reach for. Simply because even if I know that they are most likely going to be antagonistic, my kindness will always reflect who I am, whereas their reaction reflects who they are. That's the person I want to be.
curiousvalkyrie.bsky.social
There are times when you have to push back, where you have to be strong in your convictions, but when I meet hate I always try to consider what my reactions consequences will be, and what is says about me. Unless I feel like I will do damage by being kind/understanding, I tend to default to that.
curiousvalkyrie.bsky.social
Yea, I get why people wouldn't understand why Emma would do that, but I do get it (admittedly I'm often too forgiving), but for me it's not about their feelings towards me. Kindness and compassion towards someone who might dislike or even hate you isn't to me a bad thing, not when it costs nothing.

It's so funny to say you can still love someone despite their beliefs when this was always gonna be their response

Also going to add, 100% the far right's rhetoric helped cause this, as did the lax gun legislation he pushed for. In a lot of ways, this is self inflicted.

With everything happening right now I understand why people would celebrate, but I won't. Still a tragedy, still shouldn't have happened.
curiousvalkyrie.bsky.social
Also worth mentioning, people are...complicated. I know it's easy to think of all the terrible things he's done/advocated for, but that doesn't change the inherent value of an individual, and sometimes that makes it easy to overlook the good in a person...complicated take, maybe too forgiving of him
curiousvalkyrie.bsky.social
Siiigh, god damn it. Charlie Kirk does NOT deserve to be a Martyr.

Personally, I believe that political violence like this is corrosive and inherently damages the causes it proclaims to support. As terrible as he was, I didn't want this to happen, and it's a genuine tragedy.

Let's GOOO. Proud to be a Chicagoan.

...mind you, I do NOT assume this isn't a fake out to cause some of us to lower our guard.

But if not, glad they got the message. The Nation Guard is NOT welcome here (tho if any of them wanna come vacation in a non enforcement capacity, welcome! Lots to do)

Certainly looks like we scared the President away from Chicago. Fighting like hell works.
“They are a progressive city, and they don’t want the president’s help. That’s on them. It’s horrific that they don’t want President Trump’s help.”

“Chicago should be begging Donald Trump for help to keep Chicago safe,” Bondi added. “Yet, they aren’t so we’re going to go into a city who wants us there.”

In my defense I did smile pretty big and was amused, just not "laugh uncontrollably" amused.

Also, as is common in these cases I immediately exclaimed "Yea, I can see why you found that funny, that's 100% your style of humor"

Sometimes our styles overlap, sometimes they don't XD

If I have to shop at a company that doesn't care about me, I would rather do so at one that doesn't pretend to. It felt like such a betrayal, specifically because of how much they embraced it before. Target told us it had our backs, it cared, but abandoned us when it was no longer convenient.
curiousvalkyrie.bsky.social
Used to love shopping at target, genuinely miss clothes shopping there, BUT...doesn't matter WHAT you do price wise/goods wise. Until you admit your mistakes removing DEI practices and start reversing those decisions, I won't be buying. PERIOD.

Even if I don't fully believe it today, I know that I'm not alone, and that we are fighting for each other; We are trying...even if I sometimes, like today, it feels impossible. Remind yourself that yesterday you had hope, tomorrow you'll have hope, and that will be enough. That keeps me going.
