No one is illegal on stolen land.

Yeah I didn’t know that when I walked into her office, nor when I wrote the letter and posted it online.

It’s on her LinkedIn—not sure it’s burying the lede since it was with the city of chicago…

lol these are the same guys who “collaborated” with WalMart in public parks. I called them out and they freaked out and DMed me to try and understand my perspective on why public parks aren’t for bullshit brand activations.

Not sure if this is a useful lead for @blockclubchi.bsky.social or @thetriibe.com or @unraveledpress.com — this is the same alder who wrote a nasty op ed about unhoused people in public parks and also worked for homeland security…

In Chicago we have alders that represent 50 different community areas. I went to my Alderwoman’s office this morning to ask about her silence on the ICE activity in our ward. After a poor exchange I wanted to share the follow-up letter I sent:

This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

This “municipal-adjacent” sign is a handy reminder to drivers to keep their cars out of our traffic lanes—or start paying for the privlege.

In Chicago, public roads are used to store private vehicles en masse—sometimes even for free. And yet my local bike lane has oil stains from the cars that regularly use it as overflow parking.

There was also a neighbor there (me) who was seeking empathy despite the real problems that are happening with an encampment a block away. It did not feel good to me that the local community was mostly not engaged while this encampment was used for a press moment. Is that good faith solutioning?

Public parks are for all—housed and unhoused. But also when a park turns into an housing encampment, the park is no longer for all. It’s ok to balance that complexity.

While all eyes are on ICE this week, the city has confirmed plans to clear an encampment of unhoused people in Legion Park early Tuesday morning.

Community advocates posted this flyer asking for support and they’ll be holding a press conf, alongside park residents, on Monday at 9am in the park.
A flyer that reads:

STOP THE SWEEP! PARKS FOR ALL

On September 9th, the Chicago Park District plans to allow a sweep of the Legion Park encampment, displacing and endangering many of our neighbors. Scan here to urge 39th ward Ald. Nugent and the Park District to address the community with dignity and care, NOT forceful displacement.

Come out to Legion Park on 9/9 @ 9AM to support the community and document any action taken! Interested in more ways to support your unhoused neighbors?

Agree. I had a nice chat with a few of the organizers just now. I definitely can empathize with how hard it is to get the word out about anything in the community—I’ve been there. But that’s also crucial to have all parties represented when discussing public spaces.

I’m at the press conference now. I’m seeing a few flyers in the park—I saw no flyers posted in the blocks adjacent. No one reached out to the local Facebook page or HNPCA.
