In the wake of a damning EPA Report this week on water quality, I questioned the Taoiseach today on Lady's Island Lake. The local action group are seeking monthly tests to be carried out along with confirmed funding for actions that will support local farmers to reduce runoff into the lake (1/2)

I was delighted to welcome the European Climate Pact Ambassadors in City Council today & also to attend the Climate Lunch Dialogue. We discussed issues about water, flooding, security, & climate action.
Thanks to Lord Mayor Fergal Dennehy for being part of this positive and constructive discussion.

Reports of large-scale destruction of centuries-old native broadleaved trees and hedgerows in Co. Cork are truly shocking.

The Green Party is today calling for a thorough investigation to be led by the NPWS Wildlife Crime Directorate alongside An Garda Síochána.

The EU is on track to do its part to protect the climate by 2050 but we can’t stop pushing for it!

🇪🇺 Next week, the European Council is discussing climate targets that they will bring at COP30.

We urge them to make them ambitious.
To protect the climate is to protect Europe.
The EU must stay on track." It shows a line graph of EU net greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 to 2050. The pink line represents actual emissions from 1990 to 2020, showing a steady decline, with the 2020 actual emissions slightly below the 2020 target (marked with a yellow dot). A dotted blue line projects further reductions toward the EU’s climate goals: the 2030 target, the 2040 target, and the 2050 target, which reaches net zero. Text at the top says, “We’re halfway, we can’t stop now.” The source is the European Environment Agency (EEA).

We need an urgent step-change in how we tackle the continued decline in Ireland’s water quality.

Our watercourses now face a perfect storm of rising temperatures and drought, making them more susceptible to pollution and run-off.

🪸 The planet is on the brink of its first catastrophic climate tipping point.

This will translate into more floods, droughts, heatwaves and wildfires in our backyards.

🇪🇺 We urge the EU leaders to be ambitious in their climate targets.
🚨There is no time to waste.
The coral reefs
are dying.

Over 80% of reefs in over 80 countries

I was delighted to attend and speak at the launch of Sanctuary Catering in Cork yesterday, a new migrant-led catering project from Saoirse Ethnic Hands.
As someone who came to Ireland as an asylum seeker, I know how powerful it is when people are the chance to share their talents, culture, story.

Brilliantly up-front piece by Geraldine Herbert on the culture-war driven U-turn on road safety by Micheál Martin's new government with the "Rural Independents".

Bottom line: "The original vision of a consistent, national approach has been replaced by a fragmented and much slower process."

Proud to stand once again with the people of Palestine at Saturday’s rally in Cork. Once again there was an incredible turnout and powerful show of solidarity.
The call remains loud and clear.
End the occupation. Free Palestine.
Thanks to everyone who came out.

No new money for nature restoration, a static heritage budget and nothing meaningful to fix our rivers, lakes and estuaries.

The Taoiseach creates a false choice here. Climate Action is about making life better, making energy cheaper, making our atmosphere cleaner.
But that requires leadership. We see none from this Government.

Deadline closes in a short time for submission on the River Bride (Blackpool) Drainage Scheme.

Here's my submission, outlining the environmental, social and urban planning impacts of the project — that won't benefit households and businesses affected in Blackpool.

On Budget 2025, I can’t accept that greater consideration continues to be given to landlords over young people — students and hardworking young workers alike. There are still no real or encouraging solutions to the housing crisis. We need stronger leadership to take control of our housing market.

Posting for other commuter cyclists in #SpeirGorm

Cycling Ireland is the only place I know to offer third-party insurance to commuter cyclists in Ireland.

It comes as part of membership and works out about 70–90c per week depending on options. Cheaper if you book between now and the end of 2025.

🏠Having a warm place to live should not depend solely on a landlord's decision.

❗We need a Government strategy to ensure that everyone benefits from this retrofit revolution with increased incentives and minimum BER standards for rental properties.

Thanks Liudmyla Bortok and the Cork Independent for reporting my comments on this week's budget for Cork.

The Taoiseach called it "transformational". In fact, a list of half-finished projects. No mention if what was started by the Green Party will be completed for commuters by this government.
