I think the lines definitely get blurred these days with how many comic artists dual wield as storyboard artists and came through that animation school pipeline! For what it’s worth, I do agree with you, I think if people want to pursue those solo endeavours they should flex what makes them unique

It’s funny because when I was at Sheridan from 2005-2009 the big critique I got was that I drew like an “illustrator” because I had a pretty distinct personal style and wasn’t doing a lot of drawings that looked like they could seamlessly fit into a show being made at the time

Not to make it sound like I’m pointing “CalArts Style” fingers or anything, it’s just like uh… the big difference between animation and Illustration programs until recently was like… are you learning to sing in a Choir or are you learning to sing as a solo artist

While animators were encouraged to mould themselves to the house style of the company that they planned to work at for the duration if their careers! Like, you saw people’s CalArts films and you could tell “that guy’s going to Disney, that guy’s going to Nick, that guy’s going to CN”

This was more of a thing before the very recent era of everyone getting fired every four months and no one having tenure anywhere, but for a long time this was the big difference between illustrators and animators! Illustrators were encouraged to cultivate a personal style-

I think it depends! Some people made a career out if being part of the Mouse Machine. Jin Kim is a really great example of a Disney lifer who made a career out of Being Super Good at Handling the Glen Keane Style and Mentoring Other People on Doing It As Well

I definitely understand what you mean by comparing it to surface level “Ghibli Style” approximations, but I dunno if I’d say he’s the “only one” doing his thing when there was pretty much a “how to draw like Glen Keane” factory sitting in SoCal for most of our lives

Hm, my counterpoint to this is that there was a good 20 year period where Disney hired people in the basis of “how much they draw like Glen Keane” and CalArts pretty actively groomed people with ambitions of going to Disney to draw like that, because it was more or less considered their House Style

Everyone’s sending me that Yakuza stage play but every time I see it my No Fun brain is like “this is a very Out of Character depiction of Majima and Shimano’s relationship, I’ve been taken out of the story”
