Bottle with Incised and Sgraffito Fish Design https://clevelandart.org/art/1962.153

This whimsical bottle is classified as <em>Buncheong</em> 분청 (literally, powdered green). Flourishing during the 1400s–1500s, Buncheong indicates pottery with iron-rich clay decorated with white slip. After firing, the color of the clay body usually became greenish-gray due to its high iron content. Korean artists tried to emulate the white porcelain wares of the Chinese Ming period, although the result was not the same. On the surface coated with white slip, the image of a smiling fish is carved in bold lines, a technique distinctive to Jeolla province, a southwest region of the Korean peninsula.

Bronze Ritual Bell https://clevelandart.org/art/1992.118

This miniature bell was once used as part of Buddhist indoor rituals. Likely suspended in a Buddhist temple, it features a cast dragon and a vertical tube to amplify the sound on top, and is decorated with Buddhist figures seated on lotuses. The echoing sound of the bell was thought to help Buddhist believers understand the significance of transience and impermanence; the sound instantly fades away as soon as one hears it. This sensory experience creates a striking conceptual parallel with Buddhist teachings, including the idea that all things and beings exist merely in our perception or imagination. An inscription indicates it was cast in the year of the dragon and took three years to make.

A traveler has presumably descended from the distant temple compound that consists of several buildings linked together by a winding trail lined with steps. The highest point in the compound is occupied by the most sacred structure in Buddhist temple architecture: a mulitroofed pagoda. This rugged landscape, with its towering craggy peaks, pine forests, and river, typifies the idealized image of religious sanctuary in East Asian medieval ink painting.

This vessel was used for burying a placenta, a custom practiced by aristocratic families in Korea in the belief that it would bring happiness to the child. This jar was placed inside another wide-mouthed jar then buried inside an outer stone box. This rare jar has a bluish-green tone commonly seen in Buncheong ware. Pots were coated with a white slip, and then decorative designs were added using a combination of inlaid and stamped techniques. This style emerged in the 1400s, and then disappeared after the 1500s due to the popularity of white porcelains.

Stone Panel for Royal Tomb https://clevelandart.org/art/1988.249

This panel shows a figure with a human body and the features of a rat, which is one of the signs of the Asian zodiac, and is likely one of 12 granite panels from a royal tomb. It is probably from Gyeongju—the capital of the kingdoms of the Old Shilla (57 BC–AD 668) and Unified Shilla (688–935) periods—where large royal tomb mounds can still be found. This panel resembles those showing the animal signs of the Korean zodiac from the tomb of General Kim Yusin (595–673) in Gyeongju, the most famous tomb of the period.

Scroll Box with Dragon and Phoenix Design https://clevelandart.org/art/1990.15

This large rectangular box was designed for keeping a scroll or an important document. The mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquer rendering of a dragon and phoenix combines texture, color, and shape to produce a dazzling effect. The large and prominent designs of the Joseon-period inlaid lacquer, like on this box, replaced the fine detail and mosaic-like patterns popular in the Goryeo period (918-1392).

Cho Hyun-myeong from Punhyang Cho Family https://clevelandart.org/art/1999.15.1

These two portraits are of members of the Cho family, which originated from the area of Punhyang. Cho Jae-ho (1702-1762) on the left is the cousin of Cho Hyun-myeong on the right. Both were High State Councilors, called yeong-uijeong, and the Cho family ordered these two portraits as a family honor. Korean portraits were copied for sharing at each family Confucian ritual; similar portraits are still in the collection of the Cho family in Korea.

A mythical creature believed to have the power to make rain, the dragon is a prominent symbol of rulers in premodern East Asia. In underglaze cobalt blue, a dragon on this jar is depicted flying through clouds to catch a flaming, wish-granting pearl called a cintamani. In the royal court, the shorter type of dragon jar was used to hold wine, the tall type, such as this one, was for holding a bouquet of flowers.
