“The study of literature and history, art and music, language and culture, helps us to develop empathy and compassion, the very things that make us a human in the first place. Get rid of those and you are losing a lot more than you realise.”

👏🏻 Well said!

The reflection in the glass bottle is striking; it reveals the studio window with a cloudy sky and some objects on the windowsill. De Heem, who was the most influential flower painter of his time, lived in Antwerp for several periods. #JanDavidszdeHeem

Day 2040 #ArtKicksCovid19 "Vaas met bloemen" (1670) Jan Davidsz de Heem. Mauritshuis. Compared to flower still lifes from the early 17th century, this painting is a veritable floral explosion. Here there is no stiff bouquet, but a colourful profusion of flowers hanging over the rim of the vase.

The other attendees are wearing white shirts, ties and jackets. Edgerton's youth and workmanlike hands are fashioned with a worn and stained jacket, while the other attendees appear to be older and more neatly and formally dressed. #NormanRockwell

Edgerton supported the rebuilding process but was concerned about the tax burden of the proposal, as his family farm had been ravaged by disease. The blue-collar speaker wears a plaid shirt and suede jacket, with dirty hands and a darker complexion than others in attendance.

Day 2039 #ArtKicksCovid19 "Freedom of Speech" (1943) Norman Rockwell. Saturday Evening Post. This depicts a scene of a 1942 Arlington town meeting in which Jim Edgerton, the lone dissenter to the town selectmen's announced plans to build a new school, was accorded the floor as a matter of protocol.

As his style progressed, he showed a preference for painting at dawn or dusk, in haze or rain. His first exhibition at the Salon came in 1882. #NilsKreuger

In 1878, he was able to resume studying at the private painting school of Edvard Perséus. He then went to Paris, in 1881, and studied with Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Colarossi. Much of his time was spent painting en plein air in Grez-sur-Loing.

"Through their own negligence, Fianna Fáil have given us a presidential election with an asterisk — the last thing that any state needs at a time when democracy across the world is being undermined."

This week's column. Fair warning, the first few paragraphs are me saying I told you so.

Lapini specialised in allegorical and genre subjects, as well as models after the antique, which he sold with great success from his Florence workshop to an elite global clientele. He achieved outstanding effects of surface texture in his compositions. #CesareLapini

Day 2037 #ArtKicksCovid19 "Bust of a Veiled Maiden" (1888) Cesare Lapini. Private Collection. This beautiful bust of a woman whose face is veiled in diaphanous drapery all'antica is reminiscent of the work of Milanese sculptor, Raffaelle Monti, who won acclaim for his ethereal veiled marble maidens.
