Lancaster Park was opened to the public for the first time on this day in 1881. It was named after Benjamin Lancaster, the first European owner of the land.

"Athletic Club Sports. —The opening of the new Lancaster Park grounds by the Amateur Athletic Association sports takes place to-day. The association have been enabled to issue a most attractive programme, and as the grounds have been designed specially with a view to such gatherings as these, no doubt there will be a large attendance. The events start at 1 p.m., and the meeting extends over Monday next.
