After half an hour I was getting fed up with Hart, which I suppose is the point about bitter clever people who cannot shut up (compare Alan Bates in Burley), but then the film took on more shape. Very good.

It's very weak, the power of Orwell's words constantly diluted by the director's choice of footage to put alongside them.

This starts off quite well with shots of Jura and Damian Lewis reading Orwell passages, then starts juxtaposing them with footage from versions of 1984 and great newsreel footage, but by the end it's a crude simplistic mess, like a really bad Adam Curtis effort.

His verbal and filmic sparring with Lars Von Trier in The Five Obstructions (2003) was a landmark achievement in the history of European modernism. Of European thought in fact.

This is the President explicitly threatening to withhold federal funds from New York City if voters elect a candidate he opposes.

This is an unlawful attempt to coerce voters through federal financial threats and a textbook example of voter intimidation to influence the outcome of a local election.

#onthisday, 16 September 1886, #TurkishBaths were opened at the St Petersgate Public Baths in #Stockport. Hot rooms 135°, 175°, & 260° F, shampooing room, & cooling-room. Stained glass windows and gas-lit by night. JC Prestwich of Leigh beat 90 other architects in competition. Closed 1993. 🗃️ #C19th

Photo of the façade of the public baths building. Mainly two storey with smaller central third storey. Built in free "Queen Anne" style, with Ruabon bricks and terra cotta dressings. Arched windows.
