Dumbo octopuses (genus Grimpoteuthis) are a genus of cirrate octopuses that look like gelatinous blobs or cartoon ghosts.

But their most iconic feature are their large fins that look like big elephant ears, hence their common name.

A dumbo octopus (Grimpoteuthis sp.) on the sea floor. It is a purplish, lavender blob. Its are on the ground, all pointing towards the left, with some being curled to that direction. It has big black eyes. It has large fins that are flapping, and the fins resemble ears. It has black beady eyes. A dumbo octopus (Grimpoteuthis sp.) uses his ear-like fins to slowly swim away. Its arms are in a coiled posture. A dumbo octopus (Grimpoteuthis sp.) sitting on the sea floor in squashed posture. Its arms are held together, and it just looks like an orange to pink gelatinous blob. It has black beady eyes and two large fins on either side that are drooping down and look like ears. A dumbo octopus (Grimpoteuthis sp.) swimming in the deep sea. It is a light pinkish blob that sort of resembles a cartoon ghost. It has its arms tucked against its body. It is flapping its large fins that resemble ears. It has black eyes. The sea floor can be seen in the background, and it appears to be a slop with some rocky cliffs.

Good news: a grant I submitted got selected for an interview out of ~150 apps. Only 2 others got interviews!

Bad news: @skypeascientist.bsky.social was not selected in the end 😞

I will keep trying.

In the meantime, consider supporting our work with $5-10/month?

Red-breasted merganser watercolor comic, sorry had to after seeing bsky.app/profile/hibb...
Watercolor sketch: a male red-breasted merganser does the courtship dance of sticking his butt out of the water and looking weird (see real-life red-breasted merganser mating dance). Says: Huhhhughhuh s'up ladies, huhuhuh.
A group of female mergansers on rocks are watching. First one: Ugh. Second one: Creep.
Third one is gawking in delight and her tail feathers are fanning like crazy trying to cool her down.

Unless you are trying to communicate about their size, I don't think it's important. It just adds so many complications that it might end up less informative had scale not been considered.

The Wunderpus (Wunderpus photogenicus), as its flattering name suggests, is an incredibly popular subject for underwater photography.

With their lanky limbs and stripes, they look very similar to the mimic octopus. Both species have a similar range and mimic other animals.

#OCTOtober
A Wunderpus (Wunderpus photogenicus) standing on the sea floor. It has its arms together, so it looks skinny and tall. Its mantle and eye stalks are also quite thin. The octopus has an orange colour with some black stripes and white stripes. A blackwater photograph of juvenile wunderpus (Wunderpus photogenicus). It is facing the camera and has its arms curving and dangling down. Its body is translucent except for its eyes and an internal organ. There are shiny, multicoloured specs in its flesh. Some are blue, green yellow or red. A wunderpus (Wunderpus photogenicus) sitting on the seabed, looking at the camera. It has a thin mantle and eyes on long stocks, with fleshy "horns" above the eyes. Its long arms feeling around and widened. It is orangish brown coloured, with off white stripes. Its suckers are visible, and they alternate in colour with the stripes on the arms. A wunderpus (Wunderpus photogenicus) sitting on the seabed. It has a thin mantle and eyes on long stocks, with fleshy "horns" above the eyes. Its long, thin arms are stretching across the sand. It is mango coloured, with beige, sandy textured stripes. Its suckers are visible, and they alternate in colour with the stripes on the arms.

Telescope octopus (genus Amphitretus) are gelatinous, transparent and almost colourless octopuses with unique tubular eyes. It is thought that these eyes help give them excellent peripheral vision.

They are also quite small, with a mantle length of 9 cm.

Was not actively participating in #invertober this year but I do have this old drawing of a scaly-food gastropod that I simply must share
A digital drawing of an underwater hydrothermal vent with an octopus riding a giant scaly foot gastropod with some sick-ass turbines in the distance
