Hi! I’m Molly Hodgdon. I live in Vermont with my beautiful FIV+ cats Fergus and Francie. Banner photo by W. Eugene Smith. Profile pic is a postcard from my collection mailed 1908. Not a bot. Not selling anything. Just a keeper of forgotten cats.

I remember someone once scolding me that advocating for cats to be indoor-only is “classist” because not everyone can afford toys to keep them entertained inside. I was like madam their favorite things are sticks, crinkly paper, and cardboard boxes. Literal garbage.

In my experience with my own cats and shelter cats, they’re very often more interested in the stick end of wand toys rather than the fancy expensive end. Sticks are premium toys.

My youngest cat loves a good twig 😝 Sometimes he'll pick one up from outside and parade around the kitchen with it in his mouth like he's proud of le stick.

Before laser pointers we had to just point at the wall with a stick. Photo from my collection, no date/info.
Black and white photo of a shorthaired tabby up on his hind legs with his forepaws braced against the outside of a brick building, seeming to sniff and investigate the tip of a small stick that a white person off camera is holding against the wall.

“Sauve qui peut”. This is a French phrase that translates literally to something like "save yourself who's able/can" and roughly equates to “run for your life!” or “every man for himself!”, indicating a chaotic or dangerous situation/stampede. Postcard from my collection, no date/info.
Black and white photo of a shorthaired tabby kitten appearing to burst through a sheet of white paper in a dark frame. Text at the bottom reads “sauve qui peut”.

They are just over the halfway point - if everyone who sees this pitches in a little we could get to the finish line in no time. $8 buys a bale of hay!

Pigeon hopes that you have given to our hay drive. Actually that's not true, she only cares about mealworms and fashion. But WE would certainly appreciate if you would consider a donation today! donorbox.org/mmfs-2025-ha...

It should be freely used to captured the unique dichotomies of all kitties. 🥰

My smol collection of vintage cat-in-shoe pencil sharpeners. 👠
Three little figurines depicting strangely smooth and cosmetically enhanced cats sitting in platform heel shoes. One cat is light brown in a dark blue and white shoe, one white with blue highlights in an orange shoe, and one is an odd sea green in a red shoe. Photo of two pencil sharpeners side by side on a wooden shelf. One is a pissed off looking grey tabby in an orange and red shoe, the other is a derpy looking pink cat in a dark blue high heeled clog.

No, but that’s a good guess! The only bunny there that is larger than him is Jessica and she is a Flemish giant.

He’s a very nice boy and look at those big paws. 🥹

One of the many touching things that happened this past week was that my friends at @merrymacsanctuary.bsky.social named a new rabbit after Fergus. Like my Fergus, he is BIG and soft and sweet and has huge adorable paws.
Photo of a very handsome brown rabbit, sitting up and looking disapprovingly at the camera.

Gorgeous, spooky friend from my collection. No date/info.
Black and white photo of a black medium haired cat lying on grass, looking up at the camera. It looks like it has pure white eyes with no pupils but it’s just light blow out.

Travelers should be advised there is a belly rub pile up behind the barn. Please seek alternate routes.🚦

Thank you both! I'm so sorry for your losses.

Passed halfway! Thank you so much! 😭

So anyway, all of this is to say that watching everyone donate to the hay drive this week had been very sweet and healing for me. Whenever I was feeling awful, glancing at that total going up and knowing the compassion it represents made me feel better. I'm honestly so grateful. ❤️

One by one they ALL came outside and surrounded me, gently nuzzling and asking for hugs. Then of course some of them scampered off to create mayhem and make me laugh. They are my beloved friends as much as any cats or dogs.

I know most people draw a line between companion animals and farm animals, but the critters at Merrymac are really companion animals to me and everyone else who works and volunteers there. Like, last night I was feeling very sad about Fergus so I went over there and sat outside the goat herd pen.
