As much as I don't like it, MTG crossovers are fine. It is a ludological system before it's a brand, after all. But without the Blind Eternites and the planes within, it becomes a gimmick. Still one of the greatest games mechanically but lacking character.

But Magic for 30 years has had a handful of novels and a few variations on MTG simulators. The iconography of Magic: its characters, its settings, its images aren't widely known. The narrative is obscure and now getting more obscured by constant churn of deals with outside brands.

League of Legends, Star Wars (under Lucas Arts and Disney), Star Trek, Marvel and DC comics (again independently and under corporate governance), even D&D have all taken similar paths over the decades and made powerful impacts on culture at large so they can be diluted yet survive as brands

On top of a game in every genre except city builders and cozy farm sims, they have hundreds of books expanding the universe and characters. And the rulebooks get updated regularly with new lore, factions, and iconography.

These games run the gamut from shovelware to esoteric also-rans to genre-defining darlings. But they are everywhere giving their fans new places to explore their aesthetic, new developers to interpret the tabletop game across genres.

Just today they announced Warhammer Survivors.

A lot of takes have been passed around the MTG community about Universes Beyond and the Fortnite-ification of the game. And I am put in mind of what the Warhammer brand has been doing for a few years: licensing a vast legion of games to capture the setting and distribute its iconography.
