It was his first time on dialysis, and it wouldn’t be his last. He learned he had end-stage renal disease connected to his exposure to burn pits while serving in the Middle East.

Libby was healthy and active, living in Bellingham after he returned from his deployment in Afghanistan. In 2023, frightening symptoms brought the young corporal to the hospital, where his blood was pulled from his body, altered and cleansed in a machine before being pumped back in.
