The Taínos were one of the 3 indigenous Cuban cultures on the island prior to 1894 who named it, Guantánamo which means ‘land between rivers.’ In 1851, “A group of Americans followed a Venezuelan-born merchant Narciso Lopez, in an attempt to overthrow the Spanish Colonial government.
