Tim Wakefield in 1995 was released by the Pirates and picked up by the Redsox. In his first 17 starts he went 14-1, with a 1.65 ERA. Finished the year at 16-8, leading them to a division title. He is 2nd in Sox history in games pitched with 590, pitching out of the bullpen and as a starter. RIP.

On this date in 2013 the Red Sox defeated the Tigers 1-0, to take a 2-1 lead in the ALCS. Mike Napoli’s 7th inning HR was the game winner and John Lackey went 6.2 innings giving up 4 hits for the Win. That postseason Lackey was 3-1, with a 2.77 ERA, while winning the final game of the WS.

Dwight Evans was the Red Sox 5th rd pick in 1969. In 1972 at the age of 20 he hits .300 with 17 HR’s and a .891 OPS at Triple A Louisville, earning a promotion to Boston, where in 18 games he hits .263 with 1 HR. 1973 his Rookie season in 119 games he hits .223 with 10 HR’s and a .703 OPS.

The Red Sox signed backup Catcher Bill Haselman as a Free Agent in November 1994. He played for the Sox from 1995-97 and again in 2003 for 4 games. Overall with the Sox in 212 Games he hit .252, with 19 HR’s and a .722 OPS. After his playing career he served as a Sox Coach from 2004-06.

On this date in 1986 the Red Sox defeated the Angels 8-1 in Game 7 of the ALCS, to clinch the Pennant and move on to the WS. Clemens went 7 innings for the Win and Jim Rice’s 3 run HR in the 2nd was The big blow of the game. That season Rice hit .324, with 20 HR’s and a .874 OPS, he was 3rd for MVP.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Bill Henry, who passed away at the age of 86 in 2014. The Red Sox purchased his contract after the 1951 season from the Shreveport Sports. He pitched for Boston from 1952-56, in 75 Games, 42 Starts, he was 15-20 with a 3.80 ERA. In January 1957 he was traded to the Cubs.

The Red Sox drafted Dana Kiecker In the 8th rd of the 1983 draft. Getting his 1st chance with Boston in 1990, in 32 Games, 25 Starts, he was 8-9 with a 3.97 ERA and 2.5 WAR. He struggled the next season with elbow issues, going 2-3 with a 7.36 ERA, and was released before the 92 season.

Bill Lee on April 17th 1973 flips the ball to Manager Eddie Kasko, after pitching 5.2 innings of relief in a game against the Tigers, he gives up 2 runs in a 7-1 loss. Lee a Reliever for the Sox since 1969, becomes a Starter that season and goes 17-11, with a 2.75 ERA, 6.2 WAR and is an AS.

50 years ago today in the bottom of the 10th inning Ed Armbrister attempts a sacrifice bunt and bounces the ball in front of the plate, he and Red Sox Catcher Carlton Fisk collide and Fisk air mails the ball into CF. No interference is called and the Sox lose the game on a base hit by Joe Morgan.

Frankie Rodriguez was drafted in the 2nd rd by the Red Sox in 1990. Drafted as a 2 way player, he only pitched after 1991. He was rated as one of the top prospects in Baseball when he made his debut for the Sox in 1995 going 0-2 with a 10.57 ERA. In July he was traded to the Twins for Rick Aguilera.

Happy 85th Birthday to Tommy Harper, who the Red Sox acquired in a 10 player trade from the Brewers in October 1971. Harper played 3 seasons with the Sox, hitting .259, with 36 HR’s, 107 SB’s and a .717 OPS. He spent 8 yrs as a coach with the Sox and was elected to the Red Sox HOF in 2010.

Happy 79th Birthday to slick fielding Shortstop Frank Duffy, who the Red Sox acquired from the Indians in March 1978 for Rick Kreuger. In his 1+ seasons with the Sox, in 70 Games he hit .252 with a .597 OPS. The Sox released him in May 1979 ending his 10 year career.

On this date in 1903 the Boston Americans (RedSox) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 to win Baseballs 1st WS in 8 Games. Bill Dinneen pitched a CG Shutout for the win. Dinneen pitched for the Sox from 1902-07, going 85-85 with a 2.81 ERA. After his playing career he was a MLB Umpire from 1909-37.

Happy 44th Birthday to Boof Bonser, who the Red Sox acquired from the Twins in December 2009 for Chris Province. In 2010 he pitched 9 Games at Pawtucket and went 0-2 with a 6.34 ERA, in 2 games with Boston he had no record with a 18.00 ERA. The Sox released him in June 2010.
