New Orleans City Council member Helena Moreno (D) was elected mayor Saturday by securing an outright victory with 55% of the vote.

Born in Mexico, Moreno moved to the US when she was 8. She became a LA state representative in 2010 and New Orleans City Council member at-large in 2017.

The US has now confirmed 1,563 cases this year — the highest annual number in more than 30 yrs. But the true total could be closer to 5,000 cases.

Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000. To protect communities, a vaccination rate of 95% is needed — they're currently at 92.5%.
