So saddened by the passing of the extraordinary Manchán Magán. Your passion for language, folklore & Irish culture reignited ours too: your energy, your generosity, your brilliance were a gift to us all. 🇮🇪 Your legacy will live on in every story told, every word revived. RIP Manchán 🌿💚

Nature’s little builders 🌿 In August, some of our monitors found as many as 1000 cased caddis in their sample!
Caddis larvae make protective cases from twigs, sand, and stones. Each one is unique!

A very cool find! a larva of 𝐼𝑡ℎ𝑦𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑎 sp. (#trichoptera Hydroptilidae) from the River Mimram. People have always assumed that these were 𝐼. 𝑙𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑠 but it's indistinguishable from the other British species (𝐼. 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑎). This specimen will be barcoded #GeneFlow24 #NHM #taxonomy #chalkstream

Some caddisfly finds - male and female Glyphotaelius pellucidus from Lancaster canal. The females lay jelly-like egg masses on overhanging leaves ("tree snot"!), and the aquatic larvae build cases from leaf fragments.

The 14-spot's little smiley face is always endearing, but this one's pronotum pattern, which looks like ears, made it look even 'cuter' I think! 🥰 #VC40Ladybirds
I saw a mother harbour porpoise with a calf once. The size difference made it look like a porpoise out for a swim with its pet salmon!

🐚 Caddisfly larvae live underwater, where they make cases by spinning together stones, sand, leaves and twigs with a silk they secrete from glands around the mouth.

This one at Parsonage Moor used a load of tiny snail shells!
