Thumbing through the new Phantasy Star TTRPG, I found this little nugget.

This was EXACTLY the vibe I got from playing PS2 earlier this year. So much outside-the-box design that felt like it was just there to be different and weird. Even inputing commands in combat felt weird!

There's a scene in Soul Blazer where a dog takes you on a guided tour of the animal village he lives in. Later, you shrink down and go into a crazy professor's table models to fight toy soldiers and bulldozers. Game's a trip.

Gameplay is a bit "clunky Zelda" but that's still pretty good.

I derive a lot of fun from games by accurately understanding and following rules. So I like systems where I feel I can adjucate fairly and consistently. I like being so familiar with a system that I can confidently do anything with it.

If all else holds, my meatspace group will be doing character creation for Obojima tomorrow, a charming 5e setting drawing inspiration from Studio Ghibli.

I've had several players take arrays less than the standard. Sometimes you want a 6 because it fits your character concept. Everyone gets the same opportunity, that's the key. Nobody ends up with stats they don't want, and nobody is ever "shit" at my table.

Rolling is inherently fun because you get a wild array instead of the standard. I correct for unfairness by having all players roll an array, then everyone can pick from the arrays available to everyone. Sometimes players choose to be underpowered to get that one sweet 18 on the board.
