The XP-40 was the 10th P-36A fitted with an Allison V-1710 liquid cooled inline engine.
Another attempt to add the supercharged Allison engine to the P-36 airframe resulted in the unsuccessful XP-37, while efforts to streamline the existing P-36 led to the XP-42.
Curtiss XP-37. Derivative of the P-36 with a supercharged Allison V-1710 liquid cooled engine. 14 were built. Curtiss XP-42. An attempt to streamline the P-36. While it flew faster than the P-36, the P-40 was even faster.
