Hey -- if anyone is still looking for a holiday present, can I remind everyone that I wrote a book about broke and sarcastic vampires, awesome kitsune, weird monsters, all set in the mighty state of Rhode Island? With some fun species biology peppered throughout?

They are shockingly terrible, and it's gotten worse over the last 5years. I have taught multiple students this year how to create a file on their desktop, name it, and then how to save their drafts in it. Because most are just saving randomly to the cloud and losing stuff because they can't find it.

Oh, WELL done, sir! Well done!

Yes, we're in Week Eight of the semester, why do you ask?

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Yes, you can save a Word file on your fucking Mac. Yes, this is going to involve you OPENING A FUCKING DIRECTORY TO DIRECT WHERE TO SAVE THE FILE.

YES, I KNOW YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE, YOU SWEET IDIOT.

Most of all, I am beyond sick of hearing the term "digital natives" thrown around for a cohort that is great at using apps but utterly fucking lost when it comes to actually using their fucking laptops for anything other than watching TikTok videos.

I am so fucking sick of having to teach my students how to save a file to their goddamn desktops.

I am sick of showing teaching them that there is a difference between .docx and .pdf. I am sick of teaching them how to upload a file. I am sick of having to teach them how to insert page numbers.

Ah, you've just fallen victim to one of the most classic blunders. The most famous, obviously, being to never get involved in a land war in Asia. The second--

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

SIR. That is UNGENTLEMANLY CONDUCT in a public forum.

Pardon me while I go and change my knickers.

At this point I'm kind of counting the months before I have to resort to fucking Blue Books.

Which I would mind less if it didn't mean having to decipher student handwriting.

Maybe I should pitch my department chair on getting typewriters for the classroom.

The report on the use of AI in UK schools, commissioned by Oxford University Press (OUP), found that just 2% of students aged between 13 and 18 said they did not use AI for their schoolwork, while 80% said they regularly used it.

One in four students say AI ‘makes it too easy’ for them to find answers

I'd go with Distinctive Penguin.

Perhaps I, too, was not meant for a life of deception and crime.

Listen. Strange women, lounging around beaches, partially transparent, possibly distributing swords, is no way to run a system of government.

Happy Columbo’s Day
Screenshot from Columbo. He his talking to his dog, which is sitting is the drivers seat of a car. “Okay, I’m gonna put you in charge. You take care of the car. You’re a responsible dog. When I get back, if the car’s okay, I’ll give you another cookie.” “If the car’s gone,” “I’ll give you another cookie anyway” “because I love you.”

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

My children's pediatrician has reached the point where he simply refers to RFK Jr as "THAT MAN."

This pediatrician visibly winces in sympathy when he gives my kids their vaccines, because he just hates to cause any discomfort, yet I'm pretty sure he would rend RFKJr limb from limb with joy.

I've spoken with a lot of my colleagues about this, and the first-years are noticeably better about doing the reading assignments. I'm kind of hoping that we're starting to see a cohort whose damage from the covid years had enough time to be ameliorated.

Really? I'd love some -- they would make some incredibly happy little boys.
